TREE PROTECTOR. Y
No. 588,029. PatentedAug. 10, 1897.
UNITED STATES PATENT, OEEICE.
JOSEPH A. STRICKLER, 0F SALEM, VIRGINIA.
TREE-PROTECTO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 588,029, dated August 10, 1897. Application filed June 20,1894. Renewed .Tune 11, 1897. Serial No. 640,399. (No model.)
1/0 all whom t may concern.:
Beit known that I, JOSEPH A. STRICKLER, a citizen of the United States, residin g at Salem, in the county of Roanoke and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Tree- Protector, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to tree-protecting devices, and has for its object to provide a simple protector adapted to be applied with facility to a tree of any cross-sectional shape for holding an insect-exterminating compound, simple means being adopted for securing the protector in place.
Further objects and advantages of this invention will appear inthe following description ,and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a protector embodying my invention applied in the operative position to the trunk of a tree. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken in the plane of the connection between the extremities of the band. Fig. 4 is a vertical section taken through thev body portion of the band. Fig. 5 is a detail view showing the clamp or fastening device detached.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures of the drawing.
The improved protector consists, essentially, of a flexible metallic band of sheet metal connected at its extremities by clamp members adapted to be adjusted after the band has been passed around a tree, the band being of larger diameter than the tree to which it is applied, and the space between the lower edge thereof and the tree being preferably Iilled by packing of any suitable material, such as clay.
2 represents a band applied to the trunk l, and 1l represents packing arranged at the lower edge of the band to prevent liquid from escaping from the reservoir, said packing being preferably of clay or similar material. Theclamp comprises members 4 and 7, consisting of bars arranged, respectively, in contact with the extremities of the band and of greater length than the width of the band7 and bolts 6 engaging registering perforations -5 in the bars, and engaged at their extremities by nuts 8. These bolts are arranged, respectively, above and below the upper and lower edges of the band, and hence operate independently of the band to draw the members 4 and 7 toward each other, and in order to form a water-tight joint a packing-strip l0 of compressible material, such as rubber, is interposed between the clamp members. This packing is secured to the outer clamp member or bar 4 by means of rectangular clips 9, which embrace the outer bar 4 and the elastic strip and pass through perforations of the band, and the clamp member or bar 4 is secured to the extremity of the band in contact with which it is arranged by means of screws 3. The inner bar or member '7, which is interposed between the band and the tree,
operates as a spacing-block and serves to hold the band away from the tree. Thus the clamp is secured to one end of the band by means of the clamp member 4, the clamp member 7 being held in its proper relative position by means of bolts 6. When it is desired to apply the protectorltola tree, the free end of the band is inserted between the clamp member 7 and the packing-strip lO, and when it has been contracted to form a receptacle of the desired size around the tree the thumb-screws are tightened to secure the parts in position.
` From the above description it will be seen that the improved device forms a simple, eficient, and inexpensive article of manufacture which may be applied withfacility to a tree and adjusted to suit the diameter of the tree, and the intervalbetween the lower edge of the band and the surface of the tree may be filled with packing of any suitable kind to adapt the device for containing a liquid insect-exterminating compound.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- A tree-protector consisting of a receptacle capable of adjustment Yto suit the diameter of a tree and adapted to contain an insect-killing compound, and comprising a cylindrical band of sheet metal arranged substantially parallel with the trunk of a tree and having.
IOC)
its ends overlapping, a horizontal plastic ring connecting the lower edges of the band with the tree, whereby the band forms the outer wall of the receptacle and the tree the inner wall of the saine, a vertical bar secured to the l detachably connecting the vertical bars, sub
outer face of one end ofthe band, a vertical elastic strip arranged on the inner face of the same and interposed between the terminals of the band, rectangular clips encircling the outer bar and the elastic strip, the inner Vertical bar located on the inner face of the other end of the band and interposed between the saine and the tree and operating to space the 1o band from the latter, and fastening devices stantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
lJOSEPH STRICKLER.
