Be it known that I, WILLIAM IVI. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harrold, in the county of Hughes, State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lam p-Burners; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to chimney attachments for lamp-burners in general, and more particularly to such construction and arrangement thereof as will facilitate the cleaning of the burner. It will be readily understood,however, that this invention is equally applicable in any instance Where a burner is employed in connection with a chimney.

Vith this object in view my invention consists in the arrangement of the fingers usually employed for holding the chimney in such manner that they may be readily bent downwardly and out of the way to enable cleaning of the burner.

In the drawings forming a portion of this specification and in which like letters of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure l is a bottom View of a common lamp-burner having chimney-retaining fingers arranged in accordance with one form of this invention. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2 2 of Fig. l. Fig. 2, showing the fingers having pivotal connections with the drum of the burner through the medium of a wire passed around the latter. Fig. 4 is a bottom view of aform of myinvention in which the fingers are pivotally connected with-the spider of the burner through the medium of bands passed around the latter. Fig. 5 is a section on line 5 5 of Fig. 4., showing the relative arrangements of the ngers, the-spider-arms, and connectingbands. Fig. 6 is a sectional View similar to Fig. 5, showinga variation of the construction shown in Fig. 2, in which a metallic band is connected with the threaded portion of the drum of the burner, said burner having hinged connections with the fingers.

Referring now to the drawings, and more lparticularly to Figs. l and 2, ct represents the burner-tube, and b the drum, of an ordinary lamp-burner, the latter having an extended Fig. 3 is a section similar to lower portion c, provided with threads for attachment to a fount, the burner of wicktube d having the usual feeding mechanism, comprising gears CZ, arranged on shaft e, and havingmanipulating-wheelf. Passedaround the drum h, and preferably above the shaft c, is a wire g, connected with which are a series of chimney-securing lingers h, the latter having their inner ends bent to form loops t', encircling the wire g, said fingers extending radially of the burner and being turned upwardly over the outer edges of the chimney-frame 7.: in the positions assumed by the ordinary fingers. These fingers are formed of any desired spring material, so that when turned over the edge of the chimney-frame and bent slightly inwardly their engagement with said edge prevents their dropping from place, as willbe readily understood. As a further means for preventing this dropping action I have shown in Figs. l and 2 springplates Z secured to the under side of the outer edge of the chimney-frame, said plates being secured intermediate of their extremiities, the latter being provided with projections m, adapted to enter depressions n, correspondingly formed in the iingers h, the connection between said fingers and the wire g being so loose as to enable the fingers to be moved laterally to pass beneath, into, and from engagement with the said extremities of the plates Z. Thus it will be seen that in placing a chimney, after itv has been placed upon the frame, such fingers as may be in a lowered position may be raised and so manipulated as to engage the projections m on the plates Z, at which time their upper ends will engage and press firmly against the surface of the chimney-base. Conversely, in removing the chimney the fingers may be 0ppositely manipulated to allow disengagement of the chimney from its frame, after which the burner may be readily cleaned, there being no fingers to get in the way of such operation.

Referring now to Fig. 3 of the drawings, I have omitted the plates Z (shown in Figs. 1 and 2) and in place thereof have formed projections on the inner surface of the chimneyframe, which latter are arranged to engage depressions p, formed in the lingers for that purpose, the spring material of which the IOO rl. fingers are made allowing a snap engagement of these elements.

In Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings the means for preventing dropping of the fingers is the same as is shown in Fig. 3-z'. e., inward proj ections o on the chimney-frame arranged to engage depressions 1J in the fingers. The method of attachment of the fingers to the burner, however, is different in this construction, the inner looped ends q of said fingers being pivoted to the arms fr of the burnerspider through the medium of bands passed around said arms and through the said loops of the fingers.

In Fig. 6 of the drawings I have shown a final embodiment of' my invention, the arrangement being very similar to that shown in Fig. 3, the exception being that instead of wire g' I employ a metallic band which encircles the drum c" and is vprovided with a hinge element u, which receives the looped end of the finger 7L, which latter forms the second element of the hinge-joint. The means for preventing the dropping of the fingers is the same as is shown in Figs. 3, 4, and -d. e., a projection o on the inner wall of the chimney-frame.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a device of the class described, a chimney-retaining finger adapted to rise above and fall below the burner-frame to engage and disengage a chimney and facilitate cleaning of the burner.

2. A device of the class described, comprising a plurality of chimneyretaining fingers adapted to rise above and fall belowr the burner-frame to engage and disen gage a chimney and facilitate cleaning of the burner, and means for holding them in an engaging position.

In a device of the class described, the combination with a burner of a chimney-retaining finger pivotally connected therewith to rise above and fall below the burner-frame to engage and disengage a chimney and facilitate cleaning of the burner, and means for holding the linger in an engaging position.

4. The combination with abnrner of a chimney retaining finger pivotally connected therewith through the medium of a binder passed around a portion of said burner, said finger being adapted to rise above and fall below the burner-frame to engage and disengage the chimney, and facilitate cleaning of the burner, and means f'or holding said finger in an engaging position.

5. The combination with a lamp-burner of a series of fingers connected therewith and adapted to engage and disengage a chimney, each of said fingers being provided with a depression adapted to engage a projection carried by a portion of the burner to retain the finger in a fixed position.V

6. The combination with a lamp-burner of a series of chimney-retaining fin gers pivotally connected therewith, and plates carried by the burner and having projections, said fingers being provided with depressions arranged to receive the projections on the plates to hold the fingers in fixed positions. I

7. The combination with a burner of a 1inger pivotally connected therewith to engage and disengage a chimney and facilitate cleaning of the burner, said finger having a depression, and a plate carried by the burner and provided with a projection adapted to engage a depression in the finger and retain it in a fixed position.
