LAM P-SHADE HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 452,573, dated May 19, 1891.

Be it known that I, JOSEPH J-AUCH, of Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented new Improve- 5 ments in Lamp-Shade Holders; and I -do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in

This invention relates to an improvement in that classiof shade-holders which are designed for the larger class of lamp-shades, and

which are usually of conical shape. These holders consist of a metal crown with a ring below connected to the crown by arms extending from the base to the crown. These holders are so large that unless some provis- 2 5 ion is made for their ready contraction they occupy so large a space as to beinconvenient for packing and transportation.

The object of my invention is a simple and cheap construction of the holder, whereby itmay be readily contracted into the smallest possible space; and it consists in the construction, as hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claims.

A represents the base-ring, which is made 55 from wire, as usual in this class of shadeholders. B represents the crown, made from sheet metal. The crown is constructed with an inwardly-turned flange C at its lower end, and the inner edge of this flange is turned downward to form a vertical annular flange D. To the base-ring A two or more wire arms E are hinged, so that they may fold into the plane of the base A, as indicated in broken lines, Fig. 1, or be turned up, inclining inward and upward to the crowii, as shown. In this turned-up position they give to the holder the requisite conical shape to receive the shade.

To detachably connect the upper end of the arms E to the crown, the said upper ends are each constructed to form a vertical hook F, opening downward, and the flange C is constructed with openings G, (see Fig. 2,) the said openings extending from the flange D outward and corresponding in position to the position of the arms, the opening being such as to permit the hooked ends of the arms to pass up through them, as represented in broken lines, Fig. 1. \Vhen the hooked ends are thus passed up through the said openings, to they may then be drawn down onto the flange D, and so as to engage therewith, as represented in Fig. 1. Preferably a socket H is formed upon the inside of the flange D to receive the end of the hook, as shown. These sockets are best made from a strip of sheet metal bent to the required shape and riveted to the inside of the flange D, as seen in Fig.

2; but the socket, while desirable, is not essential to the invention. The hooks engage the flange of the crown with sufficient friction to hold them in place.

The shade is of usual construction and applied in the usual manner, and the shade is also supported from the lamp, through connection with the crown, in the usual manner, which is not necessary to be shown in this application, as such connections form no part of the present invention.

A lamp-shade holder consisting of the base-ring and two or more arms E, hinged thereto and so as to swing in a vertical plane, the upper ends of the arms constructed with vertical hooks opening downward, combined with a crown constructed with a horizontal t inwardly turned flange, the said horizontal flange having an annular vertical flange around its inner edge, and the said horizon- 5 tal flange constructed with openings corresponding to the position of said arms and through which the said hooked ends may pass, the said hooks being adapted to hook upon the upper edge of the said annular 10o flange through said openings, substantially as described.

2. A lamp-shade holder consisting of the base-ringA and the wire arms E, hinged thereto, the said arms terminating at their upper ends in vertical hooks F, opening downward, combined with a sheet-metal crown B,eonstrueted with a horizontal flange C, terminat ing at its inner edge in a vertical flange D, said flange 0 constructed with openings G, corresponding in position to the arms E, and the flange D provided with sockets 11 upon the inside corresponding to the said openings G, the hooks of the arms being adapted to pass through said openings and hook over said flange D into said sockets II, substantially as described.
