CHECKRElN-LOOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 587,282, dated July 27, 1897.
Application filed April 11, 1896.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JASON T. FOGG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Garland, in the county of Penobscot and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oheckrein-Loops; and I dodeclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to'the let-ters'of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to harness attachments and is directed to improvements in checkrein-loops employed to connect the rein with its hook, the invention having for its 0bject the provision of a loop possessing advantages in point of economy and durability, but more especially in point of efficiency in operation, as the construction employed entirely precludes accidental disconnection of the loop from the hook.
The construction and operation of my improved checkrein-loop is fully set forth in the following detail description, which is to be read in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of a checkrein-loop embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View thereof.
Referring to the said drawings by letter, A denotes my improved loop, which is constructed mainly of leather or other suitable material, a strip of the material being folded to form the loop portion a for the hook, the ends of the strip being brought together and secured by a rivet b. The eye for an oVerdraw-checkrein connection may be in a separate metallic piece, asshown at c, in which instance ears 0 c are formed therewith, the ears being perforated to receive the rivet,as shown. The eye may also be formed in the strip it- Serial No. 587,103. (No model.)
self, either by giving the strip beyond the rivet an eye form, as shown at d, for overdraw-checkreins, or by transversely perforating the folded ends beyond the rivet for side checkreins, or in any other suitable manner.
Within the loop portion a are arranged two spring-strips e e, which are perforated at one end to receive the rivet h, by which latter they are held to place, the free ends extending along the inner sides of the loop portion and operating by their spring action, which is toward the center, to contract the loop-opening and to thereby in practice cause the loop to bind on the check-hook and maintain its connection therewith. The degree of resiliency of the spring members is sufficient only to cause the necessary binding action on the hook and readily permits of the connection and disconnection of theloop and hook by hand for the purpose of checking and unchecking the animal. The employment of the spring members in connection with the loop enables the employment of the simplest form of hook, thereby dispensing with the necessity of employing hooks specially designed to prevent accidental disconnection of the checkrein.
I claim as my invention- As a new article of manufacture, the checkrein-loop formed of a strip of leather folded into'aloop at one end, the eye with ears receiving the ends of the folded portions of said leather strip, the parallel spring-strips embeddedin said folded portions of leather strip, and the rivet securing the ends of said folded portions together and passing through said ears of eye, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JASON T. FOGG.
