Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE,
MARTIN WOLF, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN TAKE-UPS FOR NARROW-WARE LOOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,708, dated October 9, 1866.
To all whom it may concern: f
Be it known that I, MARTIN WoLE, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Looms 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation ot1 the same, reference beinghad to the annexed drawings, making a part ot' this specitication, in which- Figure I is a perpendicular section, Fig. II a front view, and Fig. III a top view, of my improvement.
My improvement relates, particularly, to looms for weaving ribbons, bands, or trimmings, and is for the purpose of regulating the exact amount ofthe finished work to be taken up, dependent on the thickness ofthe woot or weft.
In looms as at present constructed the band or woven article, after passing over a roller, A, near the breast'beam of the loom, passes directly to the roller B, operated by suitable gearing, so as to take up the exact amount inished by each throw ot' the shuttle.
Any irregularity in the thickness ot' the woot' or wet't, particularly when the article is woven very tight, will, by the arrangement as at present in use, be very perceptible, as the amount taken up by the roller B is, after once regulated, always the saine. To regulate this difficulty resulting from the irregularity ot' the woot' or weft forms the nature ot' my improvement, which consists ot' a sliding block, O, arranged between two frames, D D, fastened together by the bars E E, and attached to any convenient part ot' the frame of the loom. Near the upper end of this sliding block O a roller, F, turning freely on its centers, is arranged, and a roller, G, likewise turning freely around, is arranged near the upper ends ofthe frames D D.
To the lower part of the block C a pulley, I'I, is attached, and on the lower part of the frames D D a pulley or roller, K, is arranged.
The ribbon, band, or other material, after having passed over the roller A, is passed below the roller F in the sliding block O, then over the roller G in the fixed frames D D, and then to the takenp roller B.
A cord, L, is fastened to the bottom ot' the machine, or to the iioor of the room, passes then over the pulley H in the lower part of the sliding block O, around the stationary roller or pulley K, then over a pulley, l?, tiXed to any convenient part ot' the loom, and has a weight, W, attached to its end.
Instead ot attaching the weight W to the end ot' the cord L, and operating through said cord upon the sliding block O, said weightmay be attached directly to the bottom of the sliding block O. By this arrangement of a mova ble roller between the rollerA and roller B any irregularity in the thickness ofthe woot' or wett will be easily regulated without any further attention ot' the operator, and greater regularity and evenness in the texture ot' the material woven will be obtained.
By regulating the weight at the end of the cord L, or at the bottom of the sliding block C, the tightness otq the texture woven may be easily regulated without changing the motion ot' the roller B.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement ot' a movable roller, F, attached to a sliding block, O, and operated or acted upon by a weight, in combination with a stationary roller, Gr, when applied to the Woven material at anyplace between the breastbeam roller A and the take-up roller B, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as set forth and described.
MARTIN WOLF.
