Description

(No Model.) v
- C. O. PELDMAN & M. J. KONOLD PEN EXTRACTOR HOLDER.
Pateted July 2o, 1897.V
INVENTOR CQS ay, 237%@ Wm] UNITED STATES CHARLES FELDMAN ANI) MATTHEW J. KONOLD, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA. i
PEN-EXTRACTOR HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 586,949, dated July 20, 1897.
Application filed March 2 9 1 8 9 7.
`To ctZZ wiz-m t may concern.-
- office purposes, combining a pen holder and extractor, by means of which a pen may be quickly and conveniently removed from its holder and a new pen substituted therefor.
To the accomplishment of this end our invention consists in a tubular holder designed to receiveand hold new pens, said holder being closed by a cap of suitable construction and formed at' the opposite endv with outwardly-projecting arms, formed with a space between them, into which the pen to be extracted is placed7 and a pivoted clamp to bear against the said pen and hold it rmly during the operation of drawing on the penholder to release the pen therefrom.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective view showing our device in use.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view ofthe same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of the pivoted clamp. 1-
Like numerals designate corresponding parts throughout'the several figures of the drawings.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the numeral l designates our improved pen extractor and holder, which comprises a tubular body portion 2, designed to receive new or unused pens, said holder being open at one end, and a cap 3, employed to close the said end. This cap may be screw-threaded or made to iit within the end of the holder and bind against the same by frictional contact.
The holder is provided at its opposite end with two outwardly or forwardly projecting arms 5, each having a 4central outcurved or bulged portion 6, and thence flaring inwardly,
5o as at 8, and having their ends terminating in Serial No. 629,682. (No model.)
close relation to each other and formed with a slot between them. A clamping-jaw 9 is pivoted in the said slot between the arms by a transverse pin l0, and is adapted to swing in and out of the opening formed between the arms. This jaw has a reduced end or ex tremity l1, by which it is pivoted, and flares outwardly from said end to form a broad base l2, the terminal end of which is beveled or formed with a cam-face 13, the outer extremity of which is adapted to bind against the end wall 14C of the holder adjoining the said two arms and prevent the clamp from being en# tirely passed through the opening between them.
In operation a penholder l5 is held in one hand and the instrument in the other hand of the operator and the pen 16 inserted in the openin g between the said two arms of the holder with the concave side thereof facing the pivoted clamp. The clamp is then moved so as to gradually bring the curved or cam face thereof into contact with the pen until the said pen is rmly clamped, whereupon by pulling or drawing on the penholder the pen may be readily and conveniently withdrawn without soiling the fingers. A new pen may then be taken from the instrument and substituted in the place of the pen withdrawn.
We do not limit our invention to the specific construction of parts herein shown and described, but reserve to ourselves the right to make such changes in construction and arrangements ofvparts as fairly lfall within the spirit and scope of our invention.
Having thus described the invention, what 'is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
In a device of the class described, the combination of a tubular body portion forming a handle and a receptacle for pens, two arms formed integral therewith at one end thereof and projecting therefrom, said arms having a central outcurved or bulged portion forming a broad -space 'between them into which the pen to be extracted is inserted, and a clamp consisting of a substantially triangu lar-shaped plate pivoted by its reduced end between said arms at the outer end thereof IOO and extending transversely of the same, said specification in the presence of two subscribelamp provided at its broad base with a-caming Witnesses.

face adapted to be brought into position to clamp the pen between it and the end of the MATTHEV J. KONOLD.
5 handle while the penholder is being released `Witnesses:
therefrom, substantially as described. y O. YOUNG, In testimony whereof We have signed this C. A. SAINTS.
