RICHARD 'IREVANION` PATTON, OF SAVANNAH, GEORGIA; JULIA I. PATTON ADMINISTRATRIX OF SAID RICHARD TREVANION PATTON, DEOASED.
SLATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 586,913, dated July 20, 1897. Application filed December 10,I 1896. Seriallo` 615,223. (No model.)
To all whom, it may con/061%.- A
Be it known that I, RICHARD TREVANION PATTON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Savannah, county of Ohatham, and
State of Georgia, have invented cert/ain new and useful Improvements in Slates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forme ing a part thereof, in which similar letters of 1o reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to improvements in slates, the object thereof being to supply an article of this character with permanentlyattached means for retaining cleansing ma- 'terial and for carrying and securing a pencil, A
whereby these articles are always at hand ready for use. The improvement can be attached to slates of common construction without weakening the generalstructure, and only a slight additional cost is entailed, while an exceedingly useful attachment is provided for the same.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the an- 2 5 nexed claims. y
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is perspective view of the upper half of a slate having my improved device attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional elevation taken on a line 0c of. Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is a similar view illustrating aslightly-modifiedl struc# ture. l
In the practice of my invention any ordinary slate-frame A is provided through one section thereof, preferably the top section a, wi'th two parallel apertures d. Engaging with these apertures are rubber plugs B, having enlarged heads b formed integrally therewith. Projected from the face of these said heads and preferably forming an integral part thereof are rubber strings or cords O, which have rings c formed on the outer ends thereof. These said rings are adapted to contain, respectively, a cloth D and a sponge E for cleansing the face of the slate.
The plugs B are preferably held in secure engagement with the framework` of the slate by means'of collars b', which said collars are cemented, vulcanized, or otherwise secured 5o to the ends of the plugs B.
The heads b are placed adjacent to each other, so that in conjunction they act as a clamp for holding and retaining any suitable pencil employed, whereby the user of t-he slate 5 5 will have a handy combination of all the materials essential for use.
I do not confine myself to the specific details of mere mechanical construction, as illustrated by Figs. l and 2 of the drawings, as it 6o is obvious that under the scope of my invention I am entitled to slight structural variations. For instance, as illustrated by Fig. 3 of the drawings, the plugs B' may be hollow and the strings O can be passed therethrough and knotted at one end for the purpose of retaining them. These said strings may have suitable fastening devices G and G secured to their outer ends, the device G being in the nature of a spring-clip for retaining the cleans- 7o ing material and the device G' beingsimply a metallic ring.
In the use of the invention it is'obviousl that the pliable nature of the strings will al-v low for cleansing the slate on either side thereof, and they should be of a sufficient length to reach any portion of the slate-face.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A slate having two adjacent resilient projections extended from the frame thereof adapted for clamping a pencil, said projections having strings extended therefrom for retaining the device on the ends vthereof for engagement with cleansing material, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of a slate and two adjacent projections extended from the face 0f the frame thereof, said projections being of 9o resilient-material an d having strings extended therefrom, which strings have securing devices upon their outer ends for engagement with material adapted for cleansing the slate, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination of a slate-frame with two plugs of rubber or other resilient material secured thereto, said plugs having heads thereon for engagement with a pencil, and ence of two witnesses, this 4th day of Decemstrings projeeted'therefrom, and retaining ber, 1896. devices u on the ends thereof for reeeivin@ H l T .v eleansingpmateriai, substantially as showlbi Mmmm) MEVAMON MMM" 5 :md described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed 1n y nz1.1ne,inp1es W'tnesses:
J. W. LEIGH, EDWIN GRAHAM MCDONALD.
