W. H. HUGHES, Jr. UMBRELLA 0R FLAG HOLDER FOR BIGYCLBS.
No. 593,018. Patented Nov. 2,1897.
if I TNESSES UNITED STATES FFlCE.
PATENT UMBRELLA OR FLAG HOLDER FOR BICYCLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part offLetters Patent N $593,018, dated November 2, 1897. Application filed November 23, 1896. Serial No. 613,216. (No model.)
T0 at whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. Huenns, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bicycle Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to bicycle attachments; and it has for its object to provide a simple, cheap, and convenient socket-piece which is adjustable to the handle or other part of the frame of an ordinary safety-bio} ole or other foot-propelled vehicle for the purpose of supporting and firmly holding the staif of an umbrella, flag, or similar article.
The invention consists in certain novel features and details of construction, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the drawings, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved attachment, showing the same applied to the handlebar of a bicycle. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the socket-piece proper with its rigidly-attached bolt. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the flexible strip which embraces the handle-bar or frame of the machine. Fig. 4 is a detail section taken through the device. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the flexible strip.
Similar numerals designate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings. Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a tubularsocket-piece,preferably of cylindrical form and closed at one end, the other end open to receive the lower end of the staff 2 of an umbrella, flag, or similar article. The socket-piece 1 is provided about centrally with a laterally-projecting bolt 3, the end of which is threaded to receive a thumb-nut 4t.
5 designates a thin flexible strip formed, preferably, from a single piece of metal, the same being fashioned at its central portion into a loop 6, which is cut out, as indicated at 7, to enable the strip to be bent more easily around the handle-bar, and said loop is preferably lined with felt, rubber, or other soft material to prevent scratching the enamel or other finish of the machine. The end portions of the strip 5 are reinforced by means of plates or cars 9, the same being perforated in transverse alinement to receive the bolt 3 of the socket-piece. Between said cars is interposed a spring 10, which preferably consists of a block of rubber having an opening therethrough for the passage of the bolt 3. 'As the thumb-nut 4. is tightened for binding the strip 5 around the handle-bar or other frame-bar of the machine this rubber block will compress suff ciently to allow of the strip being tightened. By loosening the thumb-nut the device as a whole may be adjusted to any desired angle for imparting a corresponding inclination to the staff of the umbrella or flag.
The bolt'3 is provided adjacent to its j unction with the socket-piece 1 with an enlarged square shoulder 11, and the inner ear 9 is provided with a square opening 12, adapted to fit said shoulder snugly and prevent the strip 5 from turning around the bolt 3 as an axis The opening 12 is also notched, as indicated at 13, to receive the corners of the shoulder portion 11 of the bolt, whereby the socket-piece 1 may be adjusted to an angle with relation to the strip 5 in order to tilt the staff of the umbrella or flag to one side or the other, as may be found desirable.
The device is extremely simple and economical in manufacture and will be found of great convenience in practice.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is The herein-described attachment, oomprising a tubular socket-piece, a bolt projecting laterally therefrom and rigid thereon, said bolt being provided at its junction with the socket-piece with flat-sided enlargements, a flexible strip having its central portion looped to form a contractible loop adapted to embrace one of the bars of a bicycle and having its end portions reinforced and provided with alined openings for the passage of said bolt one of said openings being flat-sided to receive said enlargement, and a thumb-nut on said bolt, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
