To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES MODERMOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Long Island City, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gymnasium Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to certain improve ments in gymnasium apparatus of the portable type; and it has for its chief object to provide an apparatus of this character that can be readily and quickly erected in any part of the home, and which, when erected, will be firmly held in position without the aid of guy-ropes, or similar means, such as braces, eye-bolts, etc., ordinarily employed to fasten the apparatus to a floor.

Uther objects of the invention, such as providing suitable means by which the supports of the apparatus may be adjusted to any desired height and firmly held in their adjusted position, will become apparent upon a complete disclosure thereof.

In the drawings; Figure 1 is a side elevation of my apparatus in position for eXercising; Fig. 2, are outer and inner face views, respectively, of one of the adjustable supports; Fig. 3, a transverse section of one of the adjustable supports, taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 1 a central vertical section of the lower portion of the adjustable member of the supports.

Referring to the several views, the nu meral 1 indicates the support-s or uprights of my improved apparatus, which supports are composed of a pillar-member 2 and an adjustable member 3, the two members being slidably-connected together by metal straps or stirrups 4 and 5, the former being secured to the pillarmember and the latter to the adjustable member. The lower end of each pillar-member is provided with a suitable base 6, preferably circular, which has its bottom surface provided with an elastic cushion 7, preferably a pad of rubber or felt. The upper end of each adjustable member on its inner face, is provided with a recess 8, and fitted into the respective recesses is a saddle or brace 9 which serves as a support from which various exercising devices, such as trapeze, rings, swings, horizontal-bar, etc., may be suspended, the connection being made by means of slidable stirrups 10. An elastic cushion 11, of suitable material, is placed upon the saddle or 'ceive a screw-threaded nut 17, and the block is provided with a vertical bore 18 corresponding with the screw-threaded aperture in the nut. The member 3 is vertically-adjustable, when the block is clamped to the pillar-member, by means of a screw-threaded bolt 19, operating in the nut 17, as shown in Fig. 4, against the adjustable member which is preferably provided with a metal plate 21, and a spring 20, having one end abutting against the end of yoke 14 and the other end against the block 13, serves to cushion any shock or jar occasioned by the use of any one of the various exercising devices which may be attached to the apparatus. The inner face of the block is provided with a rubber pad 22, which sets against the inner face of the pillar-member and tends to prevent any tendency of the adjustable member to slip.

A detachable horizontal-bar 23 is shown attached to the supports by means of yokes 24, 24, which are adjustable on the supports by screw- clamps 25, 25, and clamping-plates 26, 26, the free ends of the yokes being slotted to receive the ends of the clamp and plate. The respective ends of the horizontal-bar are recessed to receive a cushion-pad 27, preferably rubber, to prevent the bar slipping down, when being used.

In setting up the apparatus in a room, the adjustable member is forced up against the ceiling, and by means of a suitable wrench applied to the head of the screw-bolts, the upper padded end of the apparatus is forced into firm contact with the ceiling and the cushioned ends into firm contact with the floor.

In Fig. 1, the apparatus is shown equipped with certain exercising devices, such as trapeze, rings, swing, and horizontal-bar, but it will be evident, that other exercising devices, such as punching-bags, seesaw, etc., may be substituted or employed.

Of course it will be understood that when such exercising devices as the trapeze, swing,

or rings are being used the horizontal-bar is detached.

Having thus described my invention, what i I claim is 1. In an exercising apparatus, a pair of detachably connected supports capable of being adjusted to any desired height, and means for holding said supports in adjusted position, said'means comprlsing supported blocks provided with screw-threaded nuts,

screw-bolts operative insaid nuts, and clamps screw-bolts operative in said nuts, and

An exercising-apparatus comprising a pair of detachably-connec-ted supports provided atthe upper and lower ends with cushioning-devices, said supports being capable of being adjusted to any desired height, and means for holding said supports in adjusted position, said means comprising supported blocks provided with screw-threaded nuts, screw-bolts operative in said nuts, and clamps for holding the supported blocks in position. i

An exercising-apparatus comprising a pair of detachably-connected supports each consisting of a pillar-member, and an adjustable-member, said supports being provided at the upper and lower ends With cushioning-devices, and means for holding said supports in adjusted position, said means comprising spring-pressed blocks supported at the lower ends and provided with screwthreaded nuts, screw-bolts operative in said nuts, and clamps for holding the blocks in position, said apparatus being equipped with one or more exercising devices.
