ADJUSTABLE SPRING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 586,645, dated July 20, 1897 Application filed December 31, 1896. Serial No. 617,614. (No model.)

To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN IVIOHMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Springs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in bedsteads or cribs and has for its object to provide a vertically-adjustable spring bedframe adapted for application to any bed.

My invention consists in certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of a bedstead embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a View of the springframe and link-hangers on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a view of two posts of the bedstead, showing the supporting-clamps applied thereto and the link-hangers suspended therefrom; and Fig. at is a detail view of a supportingclamp and parts on an enlarged scale.

Referring to the drawings, the letter A designates the bedstead-frame, which may be of iron or wood, as my invention is applicable to either. The spring bed-frame B has its two side pieces I), provided at each end with eyes a, and a link-shaped hanger D at each end of the spring-frame has one of its sides passed loosely through said eyes. Each of the four corner-posts E of the bedstead are provided with one or more sustaining-clamps F. In the present instance there are two clamps on each post, as shown.

Each sustainingclamp is constructed of two jaws or leaves 1 f each having at its upper end a stop-lug g. The inner side of each jaw is threaded to prevent slipping. The two jaws or leaves may be connected together hinge fashion by knuckles or loops and a pintle, as shown in Fig. 4, if desired, and have its free ends provided with a series of holes h, through which a bolt may be passed and secured by a nut to hold the clamp securely to the bed-post.

In practice the clamps have their stop-lugs g on the outside of the bedstead-frame, and the linlohangers are passed over the posts at head and foot of bedstead and rest between the said posts and stop-lugs.

A series of clamps, instead of only two clamps on each post, may be provided to effect the verticaladjustment of the spring bedframe in order to avoid the necessity of ad justing the clamps also.

It will be understood that two spring bedframes may be supported in the manner hereinbefore described to form two independent beds.

Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination, in a bedstead, of the corner-posts, a sustaining-clamp engaging each post and consisting of two clamping-jaws hinged together and threaded interiorly to prevent slipping, said jaws being provided with upturned stop-lugs having position on the exterior side of the post, and a spring bedframe provided at each end with a linkshaped hanger having one side arm pivoted thereto and the other side arm thereof resting upon the said stop-lugs, whereby when the spring bed-frame is in position, the said posts are inclosed between the two arms of the hangers, substantially as described.
