UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS D. TREDIVAY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
TROUSERS PROTECTOR AND ADJUSTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 586,402, dated July 13, 1897.
Application filed February 15, 1897. Serial No. 623,553. (No model.)
To (all whom it rncty concern:
Be it known that 1, Louis D. TREDWAY, of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trousers Protectors and Adjusters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to shapers for trouserslegs; and it consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter shown, described, and claimed.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device in position for use, the trousers-leg and the leg of the wearer being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the device shown in Fig. 1. Figs. 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 show details of the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
My improved shaper for trousers-legs is intended to be worn inside of the trousers-legs and below the knee, as shown in Fig. 1, and it is made throughout of light sheet metal. In its construction I employ the top hoop 10, the bottom hoop 11, the front bar 12, the rear bar 13, and the side bars 14, there being two of said side bars 14, one upon each side of the leg. The top and bottom hoops are constructed as shown in Fig. 2. The rear part of each of said hoops extends around the back of the leg from side to side and has the pin 15 projecting outwardly from near each of its ends. The front part 17 of each of the hoops extends around in front of the leg from side to side and its ends overlap the ends of the rear part 15. In the lower edge of each of the ends of each of said front parts 17 is formed a series of notches 18, thus producing a series of teeth 19, and the pins 16 engage in said notches 18, thus forming a ratchet connection between the rear parts 15 and the corresponding front parts 17. The upper corners 20 of the ends of the front pieces 17 are rounded.
The upper and lower ends of the side bars 14 are bent into rectangular loops 21 and 22, which loops are of such a size and shape that they will receive the ends of the parts 15 and 17 and hold the pins 16 in position in said notches 1S.
A pair of ears .23 is attached to the-center and front side of the parts 17 of the upper hoop, and the upper end of the front bar 12 is fixed between said ears, the inner edge of said bar engaging tightly against the outer surface of the part 17 as required'to form a stiff joint between said bar 12 and said part 17. A pair of cars 24, similar in every respect to the cars 23, is attached to the part 17 of the lower hoop, and the lower end of the bar 12 is fixed between said ears 24 in the same manner as the upper of said bar is fixed between the ears 23.
A pair of ears 25 is attached to the center and rear side of the part 15 of the upper hoop 10, and the upper end of the bar 13 is fixed between said ears 25. A similar pair of ears 26 is attached to the part 15 of the lower hoop 11, and the lower end of the bar 13 is fixed between said ears 26. The ends of the parts 15 of the upper and lower hoops are inserted through the loops 21 and 22, respectively, of the side bars. Then the parts 17 are placed in position, with the pins 16 engaging in the desired ones of the notches 18, and the side bars 14 are moved forwardly until the loops 21 and 22 are in position to hold the parts firmly together, as shown in Fig. 1.
A fender 27 is attached to the inside face and front part of the lower hoop 11, and a similar fender 28 is attached to the inner face and rear part ofsaid hoop 11. The fender 27 is shown in plan in Fig. 6 and in section in Fig. 5. In cross-section it is curved and in plan it is segmental lengthwise. The fender 28 is substantially like the fender 27. Upon the inside of the fender 28 and projecting upwardly is a hoop 29, designed to engage the top of the shoe when it is desired to raise and lower the ends of the trousers-legs and keep them out of the mud, as shown in Fig.7.
The device thus constructed is placed in the lower ends of the trousers-legs, and the loops 21 and 22 are operated to release the ends of the parts 15 and 17 from each other. Then the hoops are extended until they engage tightly within the trousers-legs. Then the ends of the parts are pressed together as required to bring the pins 16 into the desired ones of the notches 18, and the side bars 14 are moved into position to have the loops 21 and 22 encircle the ends of the parts and hold said pins in said notches. The front bar 12 and the rear bar 13, projecting, respectively, forwardly and rearwardly from the hoops,
form seams or creases in the trousers-legs.
lapping ends of said pieces, a lowerhoop constructed of two pieces, their being a ratchet connection between the overlapping ends of said pieces, loops encircling and slidingly engaging said overlapping ends, a rear bar rigidly connecting said upper and lower hoops, a front bar rigidly connecting said upper and lower hoops, said bars being set edgewise relative to said hoops and outside of said hoops, substantially as specified.
2. In a device of the class described, an upper hoop constructed of two pieces, there being a ratchet connection between the overlapping ends of said pieces, a lower hoop constructed of two pieces, there being a ratchet connection between the overlapping ends of said pieces, a front bar rigidly connecting said upper and lower hoops, a rear bar rigidly connecting said upper and lower hoops, said front and rear bars being set edgewise relative to said hoops and outside of said hoops, and side bars connecting said hoops, said side bars having loops at their ends to slidingly engage the overlapping ends of the pieces of said hoops, said side bars being set sidewise relative to said hoops, substantially as specified.
3. In a device of the class described, an upper hoop consisting of two pieces having a 'ratchet connection with each other, a lower hoop consisting of two pieces having a ratchet connection with each other, a front bar rigidly connecting said upper and lower hoops, a rear bar rigidly fixed to said upper and lower hoops, and side bars slidingly mounted upon said hoops and connecting said hoops, substantially as specified.
4. In a device of the class described, an upper hoop consisting of two pieces having a ratchet connection with each other, a lower hoop consisting of two pieces having a ratchet connection with each other, loops encircling and slidingly engaging the overlapping ends of the pieces of each of said hoops, a frontbar rigidly fixed to said upper and lower hoops, a rear bar rigidly fixed to said upper and lower hoops, and shoe-fenders upon said lower hoop, substantially as specified.
5. In a device of the class described, an upper hoop consisting of two pieces havinga ratchet. connection with each other, alower hoop consisting of two pieces havinga ratchet connection with each other, loops encircling and slidingly engaging the overlapping ends of the pieces of each of said hoops, a front bar rigidly fixed to said upper and lower hoops, a rear bar rigidly fixed to said upper and lower hoops, shoe-fenders upon said lower hoop, and a hoop attached upon the inside and at the rear part of said lower hoop, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LOUIS D. TRED \VAY.
