WOODMAN. ADJUSTABLE BRING HEAD FOR BIGYGLBS.
No. 586,262. Patented July 13,1897.

GEORGE F. \VOODMAN, OF NEYVBURYPORT, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JAMES F. OARENS, OF SAME PLACE.
ADJUSTABLE STEERING-HEAD FOR BICYCLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 586,262, dated July 13, 1897.
Application filed November 29, 1895. Serial No. 570,375. (No model.)
To aZZ whom itmay concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. WooDMAN, of Newburyport, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Steering-Heads for Bicycles, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in adjustable steeringheads for bicycles; and its object is to allow the quick adjustment by persons of different height who desire the handle-bars at various distances from the seat and at various elevations.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention as applied to an ordinary safetybicycle.
Figure 1 shows my attachment applied to a bicycle. Fig. 2 shows a vertical section of my invention, showing the method of attaching it to the head of the machine. Fig. 3 is a section of the hollow tubes E E, showing the groove K at the bottom. Fig. 4 is a top View of my invention, showing the head D in section at X in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 shows the handle-bars with a long post. Fig. 6 shows the handlebars with a short post.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throu ghout the several views.
The hollow tubes E E are brazed to and are a part of the yoke H, which is attached to the head D by the bolt N, which is threaded at one end, and the tubes and yoke can be adjusted at any angle by loosening one of the set-screws L and tightening the other. This will either raise or depress the tubes E E and the yoke 11 at the will of the rider.
The handle-bars A are capable of being slid onto the tubes E E and admit of being held in any position on said tubes E E, either in front of or in the rear of the head D, and are held in place by the set-screw P.
It is well understood that bicycle-seats are capable of being moved forward and back and elevated or depressed at the will of the rider, and the object of my invention is to allow an exactly similar adjustment of the handle-bars. The tubes E E also furnish a convenient lantern-bracket, so that the light is always thrown in the direction in which the wheel is turned.
I therefore claim as my invention 1. In a steering-head the combination of the yoke H, the grooved tubes E E which are attached to said yoke, the adj ustable handles A A, the head D connected to the said yoke by the bolt N, whereby the said yoke and grooved tubes E E and adjustable handles A A are capable of adjustment at Various arr-L gles to the head D, and secured in said adjustment by the set-screws L L, substantially in the manner described.
2. In a steering-head the combination of the head D, the adjustable yoke H attached to said head by the bolt N, the grooved tubes E E attached to said adjustable yoke, the adjustable handles A A; said adjustable handles capable of being held in any position on said tubes E E, either in front of or in the rear of the bicycle-headD by the set-screw P.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 25th day of November, A. D. 1895.
GEORGE F NOODMAN.
