BVICYCLE ATTACH M ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 689,217, dated December 17, 1 901.
Application filed February 9, 1901. Serial No. 46.710. (No model.)
To 0!. whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VERNE T. PALMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tuscarora, in the county of Livingston and State of New York, haveinvented newand useful Improvementsin Bicycle Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bicycle attachments; and the object in view is to provide an improved construction of handle-bar and adjusting means therefor, the same being adapted to he applied to the ordinary safety-bicycles at present in common use.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a handle-bar so constructed and arranged in connection with adjusting mechanism that the handle-bar may be raised or lowered, tilted to any desired inclination, moved forward or backward to bring the same into convenient position for the rider, or completely reversed or inverted for materially raising and lowering the grips.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in abicycle attachment embodying certain novel features and details of construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the drawings, andincorporated in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation. of a portion of a bicycle, showingthe improved handle-bar and adjusting means therefor. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the auxiliary stem turned within the clamp and the handle-bar proper reversed to bring the grips above the plane of the head of the machine. Fig. 3 is a detail cross-section through the auxiliary stem, showing the formation of the clamp and its engagement with the main-stem lug.
Like numerals of reference denote like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the drawings I have represented a portion of a bicycle-frame of the ordinary safety type comprising the head 1, upper framebar or top-run 2, and the lower reach 3.
4 designates the main handle -bar stem, which fits into the stem of the fork 5 and is adjustably held therein by means of the usual expander operated by the nut 6 at the upper end of the main stem 4, the said parts being of the usual construction and arrangement.
In carrying out the present invention the handle-bar stem i is provided at or near. its upper end with a laterally-extending lug 7, the same being integral with or rigidly attached to the stem 4. The opposite side faces of the lug 7 are notched or serrated, as shown at 8, adapting them to be positively engaged by the correspondingly notched or serrated inner terminal pendent portions 9 of an inverted-U-shaped clamp 10, which is adapted to encircle and firmly clamp the auxiliary stem, (indicated at 11.) The central portion of the clamp J is relatively thin, as shown at 12, so that it will conform closely to and bind snugly around the stem 11, while the terminal portions 9 are relatively thick and are provided with oppositely-located openings for the reception of a clamping-screw 13. The lug 7 is provided with a corresponding registering opening for the reception of the screw 13, and said opening in the lug, as well as the opening in one portion of the clamp, is smooth, while the opening in the opposite portion of the clamp 10 is threaded to be engaged by the threaded shank of the screw, in a manner that will be readily understood. The clamp is further provided with a fixed collar 14, which provides a bearing for the screw against the adjacent terminal portion 9 of the clamp 10, and the screw is further equipped with an enlarged finger-grip, head, or handle portion 15, by means of which the screw may be readily operated by the rider while in the saddle.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the rider, without dismounting, may loosen the screw 13 and slide the stern longitudinally within the clamp for moving the grips forward or backward or for turning the stem 11 on its longitudinal axis and moving the grips either to the position shown in Fig.
1, below the stem, or to a position above the stem, as shown in Fig. 2.
The outer end portion of the stem 11 is formed into a clamping-strip 16, which engages the handle-bar proper, 17 ,which for convenience is shown of the usual ramshorn type, provided with the grips 18.
It will thus be seen that all of theadjustments referred to may be effected with the aid of a single clamping-screw which is op erable by the rider without the necessity of his dismounting from the machine, and it will also be noted that when the screw is tightened the clamp 10 is positively engaged with the lug 7 on the main stem, so that the liability of slipping or accidentally turningis obviated.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a main handle-bar stem formed with a forwardly extending lug, a U-shaped inverted clamp, a clampingscrew whereby the inverted clamp is connected with the forwardly-extendinglug, an
auxiliary stem adjustable longitudinally of the machine in the inverted clamp over the end of the main handle-bar stem, parallel with the reach of the machine and having a clamping-strip at its forward end, and a handlebar adj nstably secured to the auxiliary stem by means of the clamping-strip.
2. The combination of a main handle-bar stem formed with a forwardly-extending lug, having its side faces notched ori serrated, a U -shaped inverted clamp having correspondingly notched or serrated terminal parts, a clamping-screw whereby the inverted clamp is connected with the forwardly-extending lug, an auxiliary stein adjustable longitudinally of the machine, in the inverted clamp over the end of the main handle-bar stem, and havinga clamping-strip at its forward end, and a handle-bar adj nstably secured to the auxiliary stem by means of the clampingstrip.
