Description
UNITE STATES PATENT Orricnf" rennnnick n. KOHLER, on CANTON, onto.
TRICYCLE I SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 381,144, dated April 17,1388;
Application filed January9,188B. Serial No. 250359. (NomodeL) hereinafter (described, and set forth inthe tion of a fragment of same, partly sectional.
portion, B, is cylindrical or pipe form, termidistance from the headas may be preferred.
' screw b, by which the seat-supporting rod-Q To all whom; it may concern;
Be it known that I, FREnERrcKE. K'OHLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Oauto n county of Stark, State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tricycles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, making My invention relates tov improvements .in
by which. the seat may be raised vertically for the purpose of adaptingthe machine to the size of the rider by increasing'or decreasing the space between. the seat and the axleof the front wheel. j l
My invention also relates to the construction of detail and combination of parts, as
claims. 7 Figure 1 is an isometrical view of atricycle, illustrating my invention. Fig. 2 is'an eleva- Similar letters of reference indicate corre-' sponding parts in both the figures of the draw- A represents the front frame, The upper nating at its lower end in a shoulder, G, at which point the frameis bifurcated, theprongs D having on their lower ends journal=boxesE for the axle F of the front wheel, G. On the ends of saidaxlecranks and pedals are provided, substantially asshown. I
The hounds or back frame, H, is composedof side bars, J J, therear ends adapted to embrace and support the axle K. The upper or front portion of said barsterminate in ahead, L, having a cylindrical aperture, M, adapted to the pipe portion B of the'frame Aat such The bars J are secured by a bridge piece, N, having a vertical aperture,-O, and thumb is secured in desired adjustment. 3
The handle-ba'rsupport R is provided at its upper end with a bifurcated head-piece, S, to the prongs of which the handle T is secured.
To put the machine together, the pipe portion B of the frame A is passed through the head L,as shown,and secured in position by V tically adjustable in said pipe-section,- a backthe clip'W." The handle-bar support Ristheu placed in thepipe and secured by thethumb screw a. A seat-support, X, of the.forn1 substantially' asshown, is provided, havinga loop, Y,to loosely-embrace the pipe B, and an upwardly -projected portion, X, hav-' ing at its upper end a'perforation, a, through which the upper end of the handle-support is passed, as shown. The seat-spring, Z is se- 6o cured to the support X, and the seat,whicl 1 is left ofi in this case, is secured to the spring q and support by bolts inthe perforation's d df.
. Tochange the height of the seat toadapt the machine to the rider,loosen the thumb-screws v a and b and raise or lower the handle-bar, as i the C se may be, and secure the parts inadjustment by tightening the thumb-screws.
It will. be noticed that this adjustmentwill in no wayinterfere'with the running-gear of the machine as in those formerly made, wherein the adjustment involved the movement of the axle-support, and in thiscase the v adjustment can be made more quickly and with 1 greater safety to the machine. i Having thus fully described the nature and object of my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- I p 1, In a tricycle, the combination of a front frame, aback frame, a vertically-adjustable handle-bar support, and] a seat-support connected w'ith the vertically-adjustable handlebar support and the back frame, the connection of the seat-support with the back frame being vertically adjustable, substantially as setforth. t t
2. In a tricycle, the combination of a bifurcated front frame having an up'wardly-extended pipe-section, a handle-bar supp oft verframe pivotally secured to the front frame, avertically-adjustable post in connection with the back frame, and as'eat-su'pport connecting said post and the vertically-adjustable handlebar support, substantially as set forth l 3. Ina tricycle, the combination of a bifur- 'cated front frame provided with shoulders, a 7
back frame, pivotally secured to thefrontfframe and seated on said shoulders, thesaid back frame consisting of a pair'of branches zoo.
extending from the socket L, which embraces In testimony whereof I have hereunto set the front frame to the rear axle, a combined my hand this 31st day of December, A. D. 10 brace and seat-post support, N, interposed be- 1887. tween the branches aseat- 0st secured in said 5 support in verticahadjust ient, a handle-bar FREDERICK KOHLER' Support, and a seat-support connecting the \Vitnesses: said vertically-adjustable post and the handle- \V.
