SCRAPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 585,553, dated June 29, 1897.
Application filed September 30, 1896 Serial No. 607,423. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN K. BUTMAN, a citi- Lebanon, in the county of Grafton and State of New I-Iampshire,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scrapers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in plasterers tools, and has more particular relation to scrapers for removing loose plaster, wall-paper and the like from walls or ceilings for repapering or redecorating the same.
The invention consists of the combination, with a suitable base provided with an operating-handle, of scraping-knives mounted upon said base and an auxiliary base detachably connected to the first-mentioned base and provided with a roughened or sanded surface.
The invention also consists of certain other novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, all of which will be hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a bottom plan view of the same. Fig. 3 represents a central vertical section through my improved scraper, and Fig. 4 represents a detail perspective view of my improved scraper.
A in the drawings represents the base of my device; B, the operating-handle; G O, the scraping-blades, and D the auxiliary base. The base A may be of any desirable material, but is preferably constructed of wood and is provided upon its lower face with trunnionsupports a a, arranged upon opposite sides of the same.
The operating-handle B is provided at one end with a cross-piece or trunnion-bar b, the reduced ends of which enter suitable apertures a in the trunnion-supports a, the shoulders b b of said bar abutting against the respective inner sides of the trunnion-supports and preventing any lateral movement of said trunnion-bar. The upper surface of the base A is provided at each end with a lateral groove base A. Each of the grooves a receives an angular guiding-flange c, said flange being secured in position in said groove by means fof ears 0 0 with which it is provided, being attached to the respective sides of the base A.
The auxiliary base D, having a roughened or sanded surface (1, is provided at each end with a lateral groove 62, said groove being adapted to receive the angular portions of the guide-flanges 0 when said auxiliary base is slipped in position upon the base proper. The base D is of sufficient thickness to project beyond the cutting edges of the blades 0, so that when said base is applied in posi tion the said blades 0 project some distance beyond the upper sides of the guide-flanges 0, so that their cutting action will not be interfered with by said flanges.
When it is desired to use the scrapingknives alone, the auxiliary base D is simply slipped sidewise until it disengages from the guide-flanges c,when it can be removed, thus leaving the scraping-knives exposed. It will also be observed that when this device is in use it adjusts itself automatically to the surface upon which it is operating by means of the trunnion connection between the handle and the base. This device is intended principally for masons or plasterers use for smoothing down walls, ceiling, &c., and removing the loose or cracked plaster from the surfaces of the same; butit may be employed for sandpapering floors, partitions, and other places where it is desired to secure an even, smooth finish for the work after the same has been built up. The sandpaper fits over the upper side of the auxiliary base D and may be applied in any desirable manner, but preferably by gluing. If at any time it becomes desirable to remove the knives C C for sharpening or repairs, this can readily be done by simply loosening the nails or screws securing the ears 0 to the base.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
t 1. The combination with a suitable base provided with an operating-handle, of scrap ing-knives mounted upon said base, and an auxiliary base detachably connected to the base proper and having a roughened or sanded surface which projects beyond the edges of the knives, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a suitable base, of a handle pivoted thereto, scraping-knives mounted upon said base, and an auxiliary base removably connected to the base proper and having a sanded or roughened surface which projects beyond the edges of the knives, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a base proper having an operating-handle upon one side and lateral grooves upon the opposite side, of scrapin g-knives secured within said grooves, an gular guides also secured Within said grooves, and an auxiliary base having a sanded or roughened surface and provided With suitable grooves adapted toengage the angular guides to detachably secure said base upon the base proper so that its roughened surface projects as described.
surface of said auxiliary base projects beyond the edges of the knives, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
JOHN K. BUTMAN.
