Description

(No ModeL) I A. D. UA-YWOOD;
MATCH BOX DELIVERY HOLDER.
Patented June 29, 1897.
h E z a w fi llNrrn TATES ALBERT D. OAYWOOD, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JAMES F. STEPINA, OF SAME PLACE.
MATCH-BOX DELIVERY-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 585,462, dated June 29, 1897. Application filed April 20, 1897, Serial No. 633,015. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT D. OAY'Woon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the'county of Cook and State of Illinois, haveinvented anew and useful Improvementin Match-BoxDelivery-Holders,of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in match-holders for automatically delivering the matches readily to the hand of the user; and my object is to provide such a holder which shall be exceedingly cheap and simple of construction and free from the objectionable feature of allowing the matches to be easily spilled, as by fumbling in the dark.
My improved holder is designed for use more especially with the ordinary paper match-box Which has a sliding open-end box-cover, and comprises a suspending-shank adapted to slip through between the bottom of the match-box and its cover and a shallow delivery portion at its bottom, whose sides act also as shoulders which engage the cover portion to hold it a'certain distance above the bottom of the delivery portion while the box itself is shoved down to the bottom of the delivery portion, thus opening the box a sufficient distance to permit feeding.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my improved matchholder supporting a match-box in a manner to permit automatic feeding; Fig. 2, a sectional view of the same 5 Fig. 3, asection taken on line 3 of Fig. 2 and viewed in the direction of the arrow; Fig. 4, a rear perspective View of the holder, and Fig. 5 a view of the pre- 1 pared blank from which the holder may be fashioned at one stamping operation.
A is the holder, comprising a suspendingshank A, provided with a perforation t, and a delivery portion 13, having retaining-sides B B and upwardly-curved projections B 13 forming the bottom and outer side of the delivery portion of the holder and so relationed as to afford an open space or slot .9 for the thumb or fingers in grasping the matches.
As indicated, the holder is formed, preferably, from a blank, such as is shown in Fig.
5. The dotted lines in Fig. 5 show the lines of folding, and this figure in connection with Fig. 4 shows how the portion 4 r r is bent around the rear of the holder to bring the line 0 r to the position there shown.
In use it is necessary only to insert the shank A between the bottom of box and the cover and shove the box down till its lower end rests against the bottom of the delivery portion of the holder, the cover being engaged by the shoulders which the sides B afford to open the box a short distance to permit feedmg.
The construction described enables the holder to be produced at a remarkably low cost, and the holder is perfectly adapted to its purpose.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a match-box holder, the combination of a relatively shallow delivery portion, and a thin and relatively long suspendin -shank adapted to pass between the bottom of the match-box and its cover and extend above the top end of the box-cover, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a match-box provided with a slidable cover, of a holder, comprising a suspending-shank passing between said cover and the bottom of the match-box, and a delivery portion affording a shoulder for engaging said cover as the box is shoved down into said delivery portion to permit feeding, substantially as described.
3. As a new article of manufacture,a matchbox holder stamped from a single blank to' form an integral holder comprising a relatively shallow delivery portion, and a thin and relatively long shank provided with a perforation and adapted to pass between the bottom of the box and the box-cover and afford suspending means for the device, substan: tially as described.
ALBERT D. OAYVVOOD.
