Be it known that I, JoNAs W. SnLANDnu, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Athens, in the county of Harrison and-State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful improvement in Match-Box Delivery-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in match-holders for automatically delivering the matches readily to the hand of the user; and an object of the invention is to provide such a holder which will be exceedingly cheap and simple of construction and free from the objectionable feature of allowing the matches to be easily spilled, as by fumbling in the dark.
A further object of the invention is to prod uce a generally-improved device of this class adapted to hang on the wall or other convenient place of support and to provide a device of this character in which an ordinary commercial box of matches may be inserted in bulk and then conveniently removed one at a time for use.
WVith these ends in view my invention consists in the novel construction hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the ap' pended claims.
Referring to the drawings Forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a plan view of my improved match-holder supporting a match-box in a manner to permit automatic feeding. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same, taken on line a 71 of Fig. 1.
The improved holder is designed for use more especially with the ordinary paper match-box, which has a sliding open-end boxcover, and comprises a suspending-shank 1, adapted to slip through between the bottom of the match-box 2 and its cover 3, and an upwardly-extendingdelivery portion at, provided at its sides with shoulders 5, which engage the cover portion 3, to hold it a certain distance from the bottom of the holder while the box itself is shoved down to the bottom 01" the holder, thus opening the box a suflicient distance to permit feeding.

The delivery portion 4C oi the holder is provided with an aperture 7 and a transverse opening or slot 8, opening into the matchchamber. The aperture 7 provides for the insertion of the thumb and linger in grasping a match, which is taken out through the trans verse opening or slot 8. In order to prevent thepossibility of any matches falling out 01'' the transverse slot 8 when a full box of matches is inserted in the holder, an outwardly and upwardly extending lip or flange 9 is formed with the lower portion of the transverse slot 8, and which lip or flange 9 is also adapted to receive and form a seat for the match to be delivered to the hand of the user, as most clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.

However, should it not be desired to hang the holder, the upper portion 11 of the suspending-shank 1 may be bent back to form an easel, and the holder may then be set upon a mantle, table, or counter.

It will be understood that with this holder two or even more matches might be extracted at the same time; but by my holder there is no possibility of the matches being dropped or scattered around, as would be the case when a person carelessly grabbed ata box of matches, and, on the other hand, the loss of matches in cigar-stores and like places is lessened, inasmuch as persons when wishing a match or light take only suiiicient for their immediate wants and cannot without being noticed grab a handful, as is the usual practice in many cases.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principles or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A match-box holder, comprising a suspending-shank adapted to pass between the cover and the bottom of the match-box, a delivery portion provided with shoulders for engaging said cover as the box is shoved down into the holder to permit feeding, a top formed with said delivery portionabove said shoulders and designed to be received by and take into the lower portion of said cover, an aperture formed in said delivery portion and provided with a transverse slot, and an outwardly and upwardly extending lip formed with the lower portion of said transverse slot whereby the loose matches are preventedfrom accidentally falling out.
2. In a match-box holder, the combination with a suspending-shank adapted to pass between the cover and the bottom of the matchbox, and a delivery portion provided with a top and shoulders for engaging said cover when the box is shoved down into the holder; of an aperture formed in said delivery portion and provided with a transverse slot, and an outwardly and upwardly extending lip formed with the lower portion of said transverse slot and adapted to receive and form a seat for the match to be delivered.
3. As anew article of manufacture, a matchbox holder stamped from a single blank to form an integral holder comprising asuspending-shank, and a delivery portion provided with a top and shoulders for taking into and engaging the cover of the match-box, and an aperture and a transverse slot having an outwardly and upwardly extending lip or flange whereby the loose matches are prevented from accidentally falling out.
4. A match-box holder, comprising a suspending-shank, an upwardly-extending deliv ery portion provided with a top for taking into and shoulders for engaging the cover of the match-box, an aperture formed in said deslot, and an outwardly and upwardly extending lip or flange formed with saidtransverse slot whereby the matches are prevented from accidentally falling out.
