COMBINED ELECTRIC FAN AND ELECTROLIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 585,250, dated J une 29, 1897.
Application filed June 14, 1893. Serial No, 477,612. (No model.)
,To all whom, t may concern/z Beit known that I, EDWIN H. BENNETT, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Bayonne, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Combined Electric Fan and Electrolier, oi which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention has for its object to provide a combined electric fan and electrolier, the latter being supported from some stationary part of the electric fan. To this end I attach to a suitable part of the fan or an adjunct thereof a support which sustains any desired number of incandescent lamps. This support or lamp-holder is preferably arranged below the wings or blades of the fan, so that the latter will not interfere with the light of the lamps, the said lamp-holder being also preferably of such construction that it may readily be attached to or removed from the fan, and the electrical connections of the lamps are preferably such that they are connected with the said lamp-holder so as to be attached to or removed from the fan with said holder, said lamps being, by proper conductf ing-wires, in electrical connection with a contact device carried by said lamp-holder and the lower part of the fan being provided with a contact device to be engaged by the contact on the lamp-holder, so that as thelamp-holder is secured in place proper circuits to and from the lamps may be established by proper con tacts on the lamp-holder and fan, and the lamp-holder and its lamps may be removed without disarranging the conductors or circuits within the lamp-holder. The lamps of the electrolier may, however, be arranged above the fan if so placed that a part or all of them will be outside of the fan-blades or if they be employed with a rapidly-running or disk fan.
In the accompanying' drawings, Figure l is a sectional elevation oi my improved electric fan and electrolier, and Fig. 2 is a section on a larger scale than Fig. l to more clearly illustrate the construction by which the lampholder or support is attached to the fan and by which suitable electrical connections between the latter and the lamps are established. Fig. 3 illustrates a modiiied form of my invention. Fig. 4 is a sectional View of the fan-motor and the electrolier.
A denotes a portion of the rod or tube which in practice may be suspended from a ceiling or other elevated point of attachment. To the lower end of the said rod or tube is secured a suitable support or bracket B, to which is attached the held-magnet C of an electric fan.
D is a rotating armaturejournaled on a tube b, attached at its upper end to the bracket B, said armature 'carrying the `fan wings or blades E.
B is an oil-cup, into which the lower end of the journal of the arm ature D extends, said oil-cup being screwed onto the tube b and having outwardly-extendin g arms which support the brushes b of the fan-motor, and to the depending lower part of said oil-cup is screwed a metal sleeve F, held in a fixed position by a setscrew f or other suitable securing device. The exterior of the sleeve F is provided with lugs f', to which are attached, by rivets f2, a disk or plate G of vulcanized fiber or other insulating material.
F is a second sleeve attached by rivets f3 to the insulating plate or disk G, said rivets passing through peripheral lugs fL on said sleeve.
The sleeves F and F are both alike, or essentially so, and each is preferably provided with three peripheral lugs, by which and the rivets f2f3 it is connected with the plate or disk G, so that the latterandthe said sleeves are all rigidly connected together, but with the two sleeves insulated from each other, these connecting parts being rigidly attached to the bottom of the oil-cup BC H is a sleeve eXteriorly screw-threaded to fit the threaded interior of the sleeve E', into which it is screwed, the said sleeve H having peripheral lugs h for the attachment to said sleeve of the insulating plate or disk i by means of rivets 71,.
J is a bracket attached by means of screws j to the insulating plate or disk l, the said bracket having a series of upwardly-extend ing arms j. i
K is a casing or basket, preferably formed of sheet Inetal and serving as a holderorsupport -for the incandescent lamps M. K is also a sheet-metal casing or basket, provided at IOO its upper part with an annular ledge 7s, on which the lower end oi' the casing or basket K rests. This smaller easing K has an opening in its bottom, so that it may be placed in position, as shown, over the screw-threaded sleeve/'2, 'formed at the bottom of the bracket J, and thus when the lowermost lamp M is screwed onto the said threadedI sleeve the socket of said lamp will ser-ve as a nut to secure the casing l in place, or the said casings K and K may be attached together and tothe arms] by solder or otherwise.
The conductors a and a to carry the electric current to and from the lamps are preferably passed down through the tube b, one of said conductors being attached tothe contactblock N, which is fixed to the insulating plate or disk G, while the other of said conductors is attached to one of the rivets f3 which secure the sleeve F to the said insulating-disk G. The current entering by the conductora can thus pass through said rivet fs to the sleeve F, and from the latter to the sleeve II, and from said sleeve through the conductors m to the lamps.
Attached to the insulating plate or disk I is a metal contact-block O, which when the sleeve II is screwed into the sleeve F comes against the metallic contact-block N, rigid with the sleeves F and F. Thus the current passing from the lamps through the conductors a and the contact-block O passes to the contact-block N and thence outward through the conductor u. The conductors in extend from the sleeve Il to the lamps, while the con ductors n extend 'from the lamps to the contact-block O.
It will thus be seen that the lamp-holder, consisting ot the sleeve Il, the bracket J, and the casings K and K', may, with all of their electrical connections, including the conductors m and n, be attached to or detached from the depending part ot the oil-cup B merely by screwing the sleeve II into the sleeve F.
By attaching this electrolier or incandescent-lamp holder to an electric fan, below the fan wings or blades oi' the latter, I am enabled to provide an electrolier and electric fan el such construction that the fan-blades will not interfere with the light from the lamps.
It will also be apparent that the electrolier forms an ornamental iinish for the fan and incloses the rougher parts of the fan-motor, while at the same time the construction ci the parts is such that the electrolier may be readily secured in place or easily removed from the fan when desired. I do not, however, wish to be understood as limiting my invention to an arrangement of the lamps below the fan-blades, as they may be placed above the same, as shown in Fig. 3, if so arranged as to be partly or wholly outside of the fan-blades, so that the latter will not interfere with the light, or if theybe employed with a rapidly-running or disk fan, which would interfere but little with the light.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Iatentl. The combination with an electric fan, and a central support for said ian and its motor, of an electrolier also sustained by said central support and comprising a plurality or series ot' electric lamps which are carried by a holder detachably connected with said central support so that the lamps carried thereby may be removed from the fan, collectively, by detaching said holder.
2. The combination with an electric fan, the oil-cup or lower part of which is provided with a suitable contact, of an electrolier or lamp-holder removably connected with said part or oil-cup and provided with a contact to engage the first-named contact when said lamp-holder is secured in place, and suitable electric conductors between the holder-contact and the lamps; whereby said lamp-holder may be removed from the fan without disturbing said conductors.
The combination with an insulated sleeve, as F, connected with the lower portion of a part of au electric fan, ot" a second sleeve, as I'I, in direct electrical connection with the said insulated sleeve, a lamp-supporting bracket insulatingly attached to the said second sleeve, and a lamp-holder carrying a series of ii'lcandeseent lamps and sustained in place by the said lamp-supporting bracket.
4f. rlhe combination with the oil-cup ll' oi an electric fan, of the sleeve F attached to the lower portion ot the said oil-cup, an insulating` plate or disk G attached to the said sleeve F, a second sleeve F attached to the said insulating plate or disk, the sleeve II secured to the said sleeve F', the insulating plate or disk I attached to said sleeve Il, the tan-supporting bracket .l attached to the said insulating plate or disk I, the contact-blocks carried by the said plates or disks G and I, conductors to and from the lamps and one of the said contact-blocks and the sleeve II, to form circuits within the lamp-holder.
5. The combination with a central shaft, ot an electric motor supported thereby and having a portion which is revoluble thereon and which carries fan-blades, and an electrolier rigidly supported by said shaft and comprising a plurality or series of electric lamps.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
