ELECTRICAL HEATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 474,797, dated May 10, 1892.
Application filed December 14:, 1891- Serial No. 414,960. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, Hum MITCHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Malden, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Oar-Heaters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the [0 art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to that class of electricheating devices in which a wire forming part of an electric circuit is Wound in successive concentric coils or helicesproperly insulated from each other and ineased to form acylindrical or approximately cylindrical heater.
The object of my present improvement is to adapt heaters of this class more perfectly to be used in cars and other conveyances and in rooms generally.
To this end my said invention consists, chiefly, in the combination of a supportingstand with the said heater andits frame-work,
z5' the said parts being especially adapted to each other by construction, substantially as set forth.
' In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section through an electric heater embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a detail perspective view of the tubular core thereof. Fig. 3 represents a similar view of the said core with the wire and insulating layers or partitions thereon. Fig. 5 4 represents an end View of the said heater. Fig. 5 represents a detail view of the spider used within it. Fig. 6 represents a detail view in elevation of the supporting-stand, its nut being slightly detached. Fig. 7 represents a detail view of the spacing-sleeve to be placed thereon; and Fig. 8 represents a view, partly in section, partly in elevation, of the heater and supporting-stand as put together for use.
A designates the tubular metallic core of the heater, provided with external annular flanges a at its ends. Within this tubular core a spider B, of metal having the same coefficient ofexpansion under heat, is fastened to the said core by rivets, screws, hard solder,
or other suitable means, the ends of the arms ,where equal to that of the annular flanges a.
D designates a supporting-standard consisting of a tube which is screw-threaded at each end, the lower-end being turned into a screw-threaded recess of a base E and the upper end receiving a nut F. This upper end extends up through a central opening B of the hub-of the said spider. Aspacing-sleeve G is slipped upon the said standard and rests on the said base, extending up far enough, so that when the said nut is turned home it will clamp the said spider against the upper end of the said spacing-sleeve and thus hold it in place. The wire 0 has its ends contiguous, and these are extended together through an opening m in the said sleeve and an opening n in the said tubular standard to the interior of the latter, thence down, and out through the base E by an opening 6. The tubular standard, base, nut, and spacing-sleeve together make up a stand for the said heater, which supports it securely at a convenient height and very securely, although the elements of it are easily taken apart. A switch may be employed on the said base or wherever convenient to open and close electrical connection. The stand as a whole may be insulated. The wire where passing through it should have an insulating coating.
Having thus described my invention, what I 9c claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with a tubular electric heater having a spider within it, a stand connected detachably to the said spider, substantially as set forth.
2. In combination with an electric heater, a stand provided with a tubular standard which supports the said heater, an arm or arms to which the said heater is attached, and a base I00 having openings, the wire of said heater passing through the said standard and base, subsleeve, and a tubular electric heatersurrounding and attached to the said standard, substantially as set forth. a
