J. BAKER.
PLOW.
rricn.
PATENT JESSIE BAKER, OF EL PASO, TEXAS.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 584,256, dated June 8 1897.
Application filed March 5, 1897.
To all whont it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JESSIE BAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at El Paso, in the county of El Paso and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Myinvention appertains to certain new and useful improvements in plows, and has particular reference to means which will enable the operator to readily so adjust the mold board or shovel into any desired inclination as may be deemed productive of the best result.
The object of my invention is to provide a plow of simplified though reliably-eflicient construction, being more especially applicable for plowingin closely-packed earth of tenacious consistency, where a plow of great strength is absolutely essential.
WVhile my invention will be found desirable when applied to the regulation of the ordinary cultivator or shovel-plow, it is more particularly valuable when used upon what is termed a breaking-plow.
The details of my invention will be fully described in the following specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention applied to use. Fig. 2 is a varied form of construction for holding the beam and standard in operative combination. Fig. 3 is a perspec tive detail of the adjustable wedge. Fig. 4c is a perspective detail of the wedge shown in Fig. 3 as applied to use upon the clamp. Fig. 5 is a modified form of clamp. Fig. 6 shows my invention as applied to a shovel-plow or cultivator. Fig. 7 is avertical section of part of Fig. 6.
The various elements of my invention and the accessories necessary to place the same in operative combination will be designated by figures, each figure referring to a similar part throughout the several views.
In materializing my invention I provide the base-block or body 1, having the operatinghandle 2, the usual draft-beam 3, and the ad- Serial No. 626,023. (No model.)
justingstandard 4 therefor mounted in said body and permanently affixed thereto in a vertical position. It will be seen that said beam is provided with a slotted aperture 5, designed to receive the upper end of the stan dard 1 and adjustably affixed with relation thereto by means of the pin 0, adapted to take through one of the series of apertures 7, provided in said standard. If deemed a better construction, said pin may be dispensed with and the retaining-wedges S substituted therefor, as shown in Fig. 2.
The essential feature of value of myinvention consists in providing for the moldboard 9 the clamp 10 and the interposed adjustingwedge 11. (Fully illustrated in Fig. 3.) The clamp 10 consists of a piece of suitable material so formed as to provide the tapering body 12, having the lateral flanges 13, between the inner walls of which the tapered nose 14 of the base 1 is entered, and it will be readily seen that the opening or seat presented for the nose being tapered or narrowed at its lower part said nose will be snugly received thereby, becoming more firmlysecured in proportion to the amount of pressure brought to bear thereon during the process of plowing.
The outer surface of the tapered section 10 may be left entirely smooth, though I prefer to provide thereon a series of transverselydisposed corrugations 14, substantially as shown in Fig. 4., designed to receive the corrugated face 15 upon the adj Listing-wedge 11.
It will be observed that the wedge 11 is provided with a series of slotted apertures 16, through which the securing-bolts, reaching from the outer face of the moldboard to the inner face of the body of the clamp, extend.
Retainingbolts having the usual countersunk head for the moldboard and threaded nuts may be employed to hold the several parts in their operative positions, though if preferred the parts may of course be permanently secured together by suitable rivets.
In constructing the moldboard 9 I prefer to extend the lower edge thereof well downward toward the bottom of the furrow and provide therefor the share 17, having the overlapping tapered flange 18, a side elevation of which is clearly shown in Fig. 1. By
thus extending the lower edge of the moldboard downward and providing the overlap- IOO ping flange much greater strength is added to the parts, as the lower edge of said moldboard is seated against the offset or shoulder 19, formed upon the lower side of said share.
By the construction herein set forth it will be seen that I have provided an adjusting device for moldboards and shovel-plows that will reliably perform its office. It will be further observed that the parts may be readily and cheaply manufactured and assembled in their respective operative positions.
It will of course be understood that I have merely shown the preferred form of construction for the various parts and that any equivalent thereof is comprehended by me, and I do not therefore wish to be confined strictly to the showing I have made.
The operation of my improved adjustable clamp may be stated to be as follows: The moldboard, constructed substantially as set forth, is provided with suitable apertures, coinciding in position with the apertures 20, formed upon the clamp. The securing-bolts are entered into the slots 16, provided upon the adjusting-wedge 11, and are designed to extend entirely through the clamp, where they may be secured by suitably-provided nuts therefor. Before the tightening process is completed the wedge is moved upward or downward in accordance with the inclination which it is desired shall be imparted to the moldboard when the nuts upon the bolts are firmly turned home, thus reliably holding the parts together in such a manner that the moldboard will present the desired inclination.
Having thus fully described the construction and operation of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As an improvement in plows, the combination with the moldboard, of a clamp having a dovetail seat; an adjusting-wedge mounted between the moldboard and said clamp, and securing-bolts for holding the parts in an adjustable position, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
2. As an improvement in plows, the hereindescribed adjustable clamp, consisting of the tapered body 10, having the integrally-formed inwardly-inclined flanges 13, and the adjusting-wedge provided with slotted apertures, designed to move into an adjusted position, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
3. As an improvement in plows, the combination with the base having a tapered nose, of an operating-handle a draft-beam; a supporting-standard for said beam; means for adjusting said standard with respect to the beam; a clamp having a tapered seat, designed to receive said nose; an adjusting wedge having a corrugated face designed to receive the corrugations upon said clamp; a moldboard and locking-bolts for binding the clamp and wedge into operative combination, substantially as specified and for the purpose set forth.
4:. As an improvement in plows, the combination with the moldboard, of a share, having a shoulder 19 and tapered flange 18, the latter designed to overlap the lower end of said moldboard; a clamp having a tapered seat designed to receive the nose of the base and an adjusting-wedge interposed between said clamp and moldboardand adjustably held in such position, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflrix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JESSIE BAKER.
