Arent* JAMES L. SCIIRUBEN AND BETER C. BECK, OF RACINE, WlSCONSlN.
HAT-FASTN ER.
SPEIFICATTION forming part of Letters Patent No. 584,248, dated J' une 8, 189'?.
Application led November 28, 1896. Serial No. 613,75 '7. (No inodell To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES L. SCHRUBEN and PETER C. BECK, citizens of the United States, residing at Racine, in the county of Racine and State of lVisconsin, have invented a new and useful Hat-Pin, of which the folloW- ing is a specification.
This invention is an improved hat-pin and fastening therefor to be attached to ladies and misses hats and to take the place of the ordinary hat-pins, which perforate the hat and deface it.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved hatpin of this nature which will be ornamental and tasteful in appearance, eilieient as a fastening, light, strong, and durable.
The invention therefore consists in the novel construction of parts hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which Figure 1 is a side view of the hat-pin and fastening detached. Fig. 2 is a View of the reverse side thereof. Fig. 3 is an edge View thereof; Fig. 4, an enlarged cross-section on line 'i 4, Fig. l; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the pin attached to a hat-brim in position for use.
A designates the pin-holder, which is preferably stamped out of sheet metal and is formed With eyes a in its ends whereby it can be sewed tothe under side of a hat-brim close to the hat-band thereof. It is also formed with two transverse pin-guides, each formed of three loops or eyes a' a2 a side by side, the central eye d2 projecting on the upper face of the holder and eyes a' projecting on the lower face thereof, the sets of eyes forniing guides for the legs Z2 I) of the pin B, which is of rather ordina-ry shape, but its bend is preferably expanded into an almost circular loop B', and the tip b of its legs are slightly pointed and broadened, so that the pin cannot be entirelyjvithdraxvn from the holder and will more readily enter the hair.
Hung on the outer edge of the holder is a spangle-catch C, which, as shown, is shaped like a iive-pointed star, one of its points being provided with a prolongation C', which is hooked through a small slot d3 in the outer edge of the holder, and the two outermost points of the star are provided with sliertdepending catches c, adapted to catch over the loop B of the pin when it is pushed in and hold it in such position.
lt Will be observed that the star C overlies the pin, so that the catches c Will not casually disengage the loop B".
The holder A is served to the hat-bri1n, as shown in Fig. 5, so that the spangle-oatch C lies between the pin and brim. WThen the hat is placed upon the head, the wearer pushes the pin into the hair until loop B' comes under the catch C, and then the loop and spangle are pressed together, so as to cause catches cto engage the loop B', as shown in Figs. l and 2.
To remove the hat, the spangle C is pressed upon bythe thumb, so as to disen gage catches c from loop B', and then the pin is pulled out.
The manner of using the device Will be apparent frein the foregoing description and drawings.
Having thus described our invention, what We therefore claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent thereon7 is- 1. A fastener for hats, consisting of the pineholder adapted to be sewed onto the hatbrim and provided with guides for the legs of the pin; a pin having its legs passed through the guides of the fastener, and a spangle-catch connected to the outer edge of the pin-holder and overlying the pin, and having catches on its outer edge adapted to engage the bent end of the pin when it is pushed into the hair, and hold the pin, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The herein-described fastener for hats, consisting of a pin-holder A adapted to be sewed to the brim and provided with two pinleg guides; a pin B having its legs passed through said guides and its bend formed into a loop B' combined With a spangle-catch C hung en the outer edge of the holder A, above the pin, and provid ed With catches c, adapted to engage the loop B' when the pin is pushed in, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
JAMES L. SCHRUBEN. PETER C. BECK.
