SEEGIFICTIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 584,222, dated June 8, 1897.
' Application xiled lilarch l5, i897. Serial No. 627,631. (No model.)
To (LZZ 101mm it 71mg/ concern.'
Be it known that l, JOHN HENRY HAMMER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and- State oPennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful improvements in a Combined Cane and Pistol-Barrel, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the aocoinpanying drawings.
This invention reiates to certain new and useful improvements in a combined cane and pistol-barrel, and has for its object to provide a device which can be attached to a pistol and when not in use .to be nsed'as a walkingcane,
The object of this invention is to provide a device which can be used as a 'weapon of detense, as a wallri cane, or can be attached io the barrel of :i y stol, giving more force to the projectile, and a greater degree oi aecu racy is obtained. Furthermore, i nini to produce a device whereby a person can travel over smooth or icy surfaces with safety.
YWith the above and. other objects in view my inventioii linally consists in the novel eonstruction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter niore specifically de scribed in the specilication and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail referonce is had to ihe accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and
wherein like ligures of re ference indicate sixni'- lar parts throughout the several views, in which* .Figure 1 is a longitudinalv section-.tl view of any invention, showing the parts assembled as a cano, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal view of the saure, showingthc device applied to a pistol. liig. f3 a view oi the cane-handle and cleaning-rod. Fig. f-i is cross-sectional view taken on line X )i oi Fig. 2.
n Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the body ci cane, of 'ood, metal, or any desired material, surronn metal tube 2, having a bore of any desired diameter and somewhat shorter than the body of the cane. One
end oi said body portion is internally screw-v threaded cariwinfr an eiternall -screwo a y threaded plugil, having an opening 5, registering with the bore' of the metal tube.
.6 is a disk of any suitable material to exclude dirt and moisture. The opposite end of the body portion engages a handle 7, having a portion S and projection 8, sliding in groove 8b, of substantially the same shape as the barrel of a pistol. Said handle 'carries a rod 9, provided with an opening 10, to serve-as a cleaning-rod..
11 designates stays, which may be of any of the Well-known kind.
12 represents a pistol of any pattern, having a barrel 18 and sight 14. Any suitable means may be employed to secure the body portion and handle together, and the same means are used to secure the pistol to the body portion.
For convenience of illustration and describing4 the operation `the device shown in Fig. 1 shows vthe parts assein `led to be used as a cane. To attach the device to a pistol, the handle and cleaning-rod arelv'iihdrawn, the barrel of the pistol is placer asie of the body portion, the sight sliding in the groove 8b, the bore of the pistol registering With the boro of the tubo 2 and securely held by any well-known means. VVhemthe pistol is discharged, the compressed air breaks the disk 6.
It will be noted that various.` .,hangesL may be made inthe details of construction Without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
llavin g fully described ny invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters ljatent, is- 1 1. 1n a combined caneand pistol-barrel, a metal tube, a body portion, surrounding said tube, one end of said body portion being in-y l ternally screw-threaded and engaging an apertured plug, a disk located between said plug and metal tube, an opening in the opposite end of said body portion, engaginga handie carrying a rod, and stays between the metal tube and'body portion, substantially as shown and described. f
2. ln a cane, a body portion, a metal tube within said body portion, and held in position by stays, a handle, a rod carried by said haindle, in combination with a pistol, the barrel IOO.
secured' in the body port-ion, the boro of midi pistol registering.; with the bore of sho metfa Lube, substantially as shown and described.
3. In combination, :L pistol-barrel, :L 'sight on said barrel, L can@ having; ay removablo handle, a body portion provided with intemal scre w=th1eads, and enoaging an aporturod AMBUCRQ
