G. W. PHILLIPS.
GASTER.
No. 583,506. Patented June 1,1897.
INVE/V TOR ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES GEORGE W. PHILLIPS,
on NEW YORK, N. Y,
CAfSTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 583,506, dated June 1, 1897. Application filed Janua y 21,1896. Serial No. 576,288. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern;-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. PHILLIPS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furniture- Casters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to supports or attachments for legs of billiard-tables, pianos, and other heavypieces of furniture, the object thereof being to provide an effective device of this class through the medium of which the lengths of the legs of the furniture may be readily adjusted to maintain the furniture horizontal.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like letters of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure l is a side view of one part of a socket or tubular casing which I employ. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the other part thereof; and Fig. 3 is a central vertical section of my complete device, showing a caster connected therewith.
Referring to the drawings, the letter A designates a casing adapted to be inserted in the leg of an article of furniture, said casing or sockets being composed of two equal parts a and a as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the lower end thereof is provided with an annular flange B, and formed in the annular flange Bof one of said parts are transverse grooves b, as shown in Fig. 2, and on the annular flange B of the other part are formed shoulders or projections 6 Fig. 1, which are adapted to enter the grooves 17, and the upper end of the socket or tubular casing A is closed, and one part thereof is provided with a vertical groove 0, Fig. 2, adapted to receive a vertical shoulder or projections 0 formed on the other part, as shown in Fig. 1.
The parts a and a are adapted to be placed together and to be inserted into the socket of the leg of the article of furniture, and the bore of this socket or casing is screw-threaded, as
shown at D in Figs. 1 and 2, and I also provide a supplemental attachment consisting of an elliptical head portion G, which may be of any desired construction, but preferably, as shown in the accompanying drawings, which is provided with a screw-threaded shank g, adapted to enter the screw-threade bore of the socket or casing A.
The head or body portion G is provided in the outer side thereof with radial holes or openings 9 adapted to receive a tool for r0- tating the head G, whereby adjustability is provided for the parts, and the article of furniture may be accurately leveled by rotating said head, and in the lower portion of said head is formed a bore adapted to receive the shank h of the caster H, which is swiveled therein and detachably connected therewith.
In forming the socket or tubular casing A as herein described the same can be more easily cast, and by means of this construction the cost of the improvements is lessened materially, and it will be observed that my invention is not limited to the exact form of the various parts as herein described, and it is evident that various changes and modifications may be made of the same without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As a new article of manufacture, a caster consisting of a tubular socket or casing, made of two sections interiorly screw threaded each having an end semicircular flange one of which is provided with transverse grooves or mortises in its ends and the other with corresponding depressions or tenons adapted to engage in said mortises to assist in looking them together, one section being also provided at the top with a vertical tenon and the other with a corresponding mortise that are adapted to engage with each other, a head or body extending laterally in all directions beyond the vertical lines of the tubular socket centrally perforated in the lower face and provided with radial holes for the insertion of an adj usting-tool; an integral screw-threaded shank projecting centrally upward from said head or body and adapted to be screwed up my invention Ihave signed my name, in presand down in the tubular casing, a swivel ence of the subscribing Witnesses, this 20th adapted to enter the central hole in the body day of January, 1896.
or head and a roller held in the usual manner GEORGE W. PHILLIPS.
in the forks of said swivel, all constructed Witnesses: substantially as herein shown and described. 0. GERST,
A. M. GUsAoK.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as
