Description
UNITED STATES PATENT GEEIGE.
WILLIAM H. HALSEY, OF HOBOKEN, N. J., ASSIGNOR` TO DAVID N, ROPES.
IMPROVEMENT IN INDIA-RUBBER NECK-TIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 58,344, dated September 25, 1866.
To all whom it may concern: Y
Be it known that l, WiLLmMYH. HALsEY,
of Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and- State 'of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Neck-Ties made of Hard India-Rubber, or other similar material; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and making a part of this specification.
Neck ties or bands made' of hard rubber, gutta-percha, or other similar material, as heretofore constructed have proved very im perfect, and capable of being used orV worn for only a very short time, for the reason that the narrow strip or piece of rubber forming the band of the bow in front and holding'togethenthe severaljparts of the bow, being necessarily very thin, soon cracks and becomes'broken, and thus renders unserviceable the whole article.
My invention consists in the application and use of a thin band of metal or other' suitable material to bind and secure together the several pieces forming the necktie, over which band is placed or fixed a suitable piece of rubber, so as to give the article a uniform appearance.
Figure 1 represents a neck-tie confined by the metallic or other suitable band, the latter being uncovered. Fig. 2 shows the same tie with its confining-band covered with rubber. Fig. 3 is a detached view of the ymetallic or confining band.
The several parts or pieces of the necktie, as well those that encircle the neck as those that form the bow or tie in front, are cut out in their several proper shapes, and prepared for fastening in the usual manner.
To bind and fasten these several parts to-A gether, so that they will retain their proper position and not become separated from each other, I apply and make use of a band, A, of thin sheet-brass or otherl suitable material, which is passed around the several parts, as shown in Fig. 1, and fastened at the back side. l
A cheap and convenient but effective manner of fastening together such pieces and the band to them is by the use of a fastening such as represented in Fig. 4, similar to the fastening sometimes used toconnect the hoops of skirts to the vertical tapes.
Suitable perforations are made through the lthe other parts of the tie are made, so that the confining-band will not show :and the article have a uniform appearance. This may be fastened by the same fastening bywhich the other parts are connected together.
The band A takes all the strain of the parts held by it, and prevents anypressure being exerted upon the rubber band over it, tend` ing to crack and disfigure it, and thus render the article useless. The rubber band Bis in fact only a covering for the band A, and serves no purpose other than giving to the article a tasteful and uniform appearance.
For making the band A, l. prefer thin brass or other metal, as it can be rolled very thin and flexible, and still have all required strength for the uses mentioned; but I do not confine myself to any particular material in making such band.
The hook O (shown in Fig. 3) upon the inside of the neck-band is intended to pass up under the collar, for the purpose of keeping the neck-band in its proper position and prevent its sliding upward too far.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The arrangement ot the band of metal or its equivalent in a neck-tie formed of hard india-rubber or similar material under the external strip or band passing round the bow and neck-tie, for confining together and holdin g the several parts of the necletie and prcserving the external band from fracture, substantiallyas above described.
IVM. H. HALSEY.
