Description

"(No Model.) 7
W. J. CUNNINGHAM.
BOTTLE STOPPER.
Patented May 25,1897.
- INVENTOR g 2 ATTORNEY.
W lTN ESS ES:
w-umo" WASNINCITOM n c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM J. CUNNINGHAM, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
BOTTLE-STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 583,211, dated May 25, 1897.
Application filed April 18, 1896. Serial No. 688,152. (No model.)
T0 at whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM J. CUNNING- HAM, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bottle-Stoppers,which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to bottle-stoppers and their adjuncts; and it consists of a novel construction of the same whereby the initial movement which occurs in opening a bottle will cause the bail thereof to contact with a recessed lug mounted upon the stopper and thus tilt the same to one side or the other, thereby greatly facilitating the act of opening said bottle.
It further consists of novel details of construction, all as will be hereinafter set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 represents aside elevation of a bottle-stopper embodying my invention and a portion of the neck of the bottle to which the same is applicable. Fig. 2 represents a vertical sectional View of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a side elevation showing the position the stopper assumes initially in the act of opening the bottle. Fig. 4 represents a plan view of the stopper.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the neck of a bottle, andB designates the rubber portion of the stopper seated thereupon.
O designates the bail which holds the stopper in position and which can be supported and actuated in any suitable manner.
D designates that portion of the stopper embodyin g my invention, the same consisting of the body E, which has the neck F depending therefrom, to which latter is attached the flange Gr, which is adapted to be seated in the rubber portion B of the stopper.
H designates upwardly extending lugs which are mounted upon the body E and are hollowed or recessed, aswill be evident from Fig. 4.
J designates a passage extending through the neck F, which has passing therethrough a supporting device K for the bail (J, said device K consistingof wire which is bent at its lower portion so as to have the lateral feet L, which are held in position between the flange G and the cavity in the portion B, while its upper extremities M are slightly curved or bulged, so as to form a seat for the reception of the bail C, as will be understood from Fig. 2, said extremities M being contained within the recessed lugs H, as will be evident from Fig. 4. I
N designates shoulders formed in said lugs H, against one or the other of which the top of the bail G will contact in the initial act of opening the bottle, as will be evident from Fig. 3, whereupon itwill be seen that the gas contained within the same can readily escape and thus greatly facilitate the opening of the bottle.
The operation is as follows: The initial act of opening the bottle tends to elevate the bail C, and the upper portion of the same will be caused to contact with one or the other of the shoulders N, and the stopper will be at once tilted or canted, as seen in Fig. 3, the effect of which will be evident.
' Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A bottle-stopper having abody portion, recessed lugs thereon, and a bail-support, the arms of which are in the said recessed lugs.
2. A bottle-stopper consisting of the body portion B, the lug H rising therefrom, and provided with the shoulders N, the bail O, and the supporting device K therefor, the latter having feet L, and the curved extremities M.
3. A bottle-stopper having a body portion,
lugs thereon, shoulders on said lugs, and a
