SAFETY LOOP FOR POCKET BOOKS. No. 583,085. Patented May 25,1897.
' WITNESSES r INVENTOR' ggofiwmmm Attorney UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALICE BESSIE READ, OF FORT SCOTT, KANSAS.
SAFETY-LOOP FOR POCKET-BOOKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 583,085, dated May 25, 1897.
Application filed November 28,1896. Serial No. 613,764:- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that-I, ALICE BEssIE READ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Scott, in the county of Bourbon and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and usef ul Improvements in Safety-Loops for Pocket- Books; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in pocket-books or purses, and has more particular relation to safety attachments for the same.
The invention consists of the combination with a purse of a metallic finger-loop having its respective ends secured to the purse and adapted to be passed over one of the fingers, so that the purse may be held firmly in the hand.
The invention also consists of certain other novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, all of which will be hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a purse provided with my invention. Fig. 2 represents a central vertical section through said purse, showing the attachment of the inner ends of the loop to the lining of said purse. Fig. 3 represents an enlarged detail perspective View of my said improvement.
A in the drawings represents the purse, and B my improved protecting-loop. Said purse A is of any ordinary construction, with the exception that it is provided in either its top or its bottom with an aperture a, through which the respective ends of the protectingloop B are adapted to be passed. The said loop B is preferably constructed of flat spring metal and is bent to form a finger-loop proper, b, and extended attaching ends I) b. The ends I) are passed through the aperture a and are secured to the lining a of the purse by eyelets 19*, passed through suitable apertures cut in said attaching ends and. said lining, respectively. The extreme ends of said attaching ends b are provided with protecting-caps b whereby the sharp corners of said ends are prevented from cutting through the material of the purse. The loop I), if so desired, may have the owners name and address engraved thereon. When the purse is to be used, the said loop I) is slipped over either the thumb or any one of the fingers, and this effectually prevents accidental dropping of the purse or theft by snatching. In a purse provided with this attachment the owner is effectually protected against pickpockets and purse-snatchers, as to secure the purse the said attaching-loop of metal must first be detached from the purse, and to do this would require the destruction of said purse.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination with a purse, of a fingerloop attached thereto and comprising a single piece of metal bent to form a loop and attaching ends, eyelets passed through said attaching ends and the material of the purse, and protecting-caps upon the ends of the metal forming the loop for protecting the material of the purse, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALICE BESSIE READ.
