Description

U NITED? STATES ATENT Erica.
ERASTUS GRANVILLE KING, OF FRIENDSlVOOD, INDIANA.
STOVEPIPE-THHVIBLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 582,930, dated May 18, 1897. Application filed August 5,1896. Serial No. 601,778. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ERAsTUs GRANVILLE KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Friendswood, in the county of Hendricks and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Stovepipe-Thimble, of which the following is a specification.
The invent-ion relates to improvements in stovepipe-thimbles.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of that class of stovepipe-thimbles which are capable of vertical adjustment to suit the height of a stovepipe to obviate the necessity of cutting the same to fit it to the stove-hole of a chimney.
A further object of the invention is to enable such stovepipe-thimbles to be firmly secured in a chimney or flue.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawingsfand pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of a flue provided with an adjustable thimble constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view. Fig. 4 is a perspective View showing the back of the adjustable stoVepipe-thimble.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates a rectangular casing, consisting of a front portion or plate provided at its rear face with longitudinallydisposed L- shaped flanges 2, forming ways for a sliding plate 3, and a rectangular back portion or plate 4, connecting the flanges at the upper portion of the casing and closing the top thereof, whereby the upper portion of the sliding plate 3 is housed and shielded to prevent soot or moisture from accumulating at the upper edge of the sliding plate and passing downward in front of the same and entering a room. The casing is provided at its front with a longitudinal opening 5, exposing the sliding plate, which is provided with a stovepipe-opening 6, and which is adapted to be moved upward and downward to raise and lower the stovepipe-opening to the desired height. The sliding plate is also adapted to be moved downward sufficiently to carry its stovepipe-opening 6 below the lower edge of the opening 5 of the casing to close the latter when the stovepipe-hole is not in use. The casing is provided at one side of its opening 5 with a slot 6 in which is arranged a threaded stem 7 of the sliding plate, and the threaded stem 7 is engaged by a clampingnut 8, which secures the sliding plate at any desired adj ust-ment. The casing and the sliding plate may be constructed of any desired dimensions, but the opening 5 is preferably the length of a section of the stovepipe, so that the stove-hole may be adjusted to such a length, whereby it will obviate the necessity of cutting or shortening the stovepipesections iif putting up stoves, because a sulficient number of sections can be employed to bring the horizontal member of the stovepipe at some point along the opening 5.
The casing is provided at its rear face with lugs 9, arranged in pairs at the top and bottom of the casing and at opposite sides thereof, and provided with registering perforations, receiving binding-rods 10, which project laterally from the casing and which are adapted to be embedded in the brickwork of a chimney or flue.
The front face of the casing is arranged flush with the front face of the chimney or flue, and it is preferably grooved in order to present a sufiiciently roughened exterior to enable it to be plastered or otherwise coated the same as the rest of the outer face of the chimney.
It will be apparent that simple and effective means are provided for mounting the stove- .pipe-thimble in a chimney or flue and that it is capable of withstanding the strain incident to connecting a stovepipe with the opening of the sliding plate and of removing it therefrom.
hat I claim is A device of the class described, comprising a rectangular casing provided with longitudinal ways, perforated lugs arranged in pairs and located at opposite sides of the back of the casing, transverse rods arranged in the perforations of the lugs and projecting latermy own I have hereto aflixed my signature in ally from the casing and adapted to be elnthe presence of two witnesses.
bedded in the brickwork of a chimney or (r T j Y 1 Y Y i flue, and a sliding plate mounted in the ways ERA'S l L S GRAB ILTIL 5 of the casing and provided with an opening, \Yitnesses:
substantially as described. WILLIAM ALBINES 1\[ARIM,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as ROBERT FRANKLIN NELSON.
