B. H. FISHER. ADJUSTABLE PLATFORM.
Patented May 18, 1897.
Attorney.
UNITED STATES PATENT EEIcE.
ELIJAI-I I-I. FISHER, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
ADJUSTABLE PLATFORM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 582,815, dated May 18, 1897.
Application filed February 12, 1896. Serial No. 579,058. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELIJAH H. FISHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Adjustable Platform, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a new and useful adjustable platform for use in washing windows, setting glass into sash after the sash has been placed in the windows, and other analogous purposes; and the invention consists in the particular construction of a window bracket or platform-having a step-ladder attached thereto, so that when saidladder is not used to reach the upper portion of the window it will serve as an end guard, it being maintained in a vertical position at the outer end of the platform, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims; and the objects of the invention are, first, to furnish an adjustable support or platform which can be placed quickly and readily within a window and attachedthereto, thereby furnishing a support for persons upon the outside of the window or building; second, to produce a support which may be constructed cheaply and can be quickly attached to and detached from the window, and, third, to furnish, in con nection with the support described, a hinged guard provided with steps which may be used when it is found desirable to reach the upper portion of the window on the outside. These objects I accomplish by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 shows a plan view of a support constructed in accordance with my invention placed in position with a section of the sill and window to which the same is applied. Fig. 2 shows an inverted plan View of the support, illustrating the means for adjusting the support to the window, said Fig. 2 showing the adjustable slots set at an angle. Fig. 3 shows a side elevation of my adjustable platform with a section of the window-sill and a side elevation of the window-case, together with the adjustable guard and steps, the same being shown in position for use when the operator desires to reach a higher I part of the window. The dotted lines (marked H) show the position of the guard when in use in connection with the steps. Fig. 4 shows the rear end of the platform or a view from the outside of the building, the same in position within the window.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings, A A represent the window-casing.
A A represent a section of the wall of the building.
B represents the window-sill.
0 represents the main platform or support upon which the operator stands.
0 represents a guard or raised portion on the outer end and sides of the platform, which in the example of my invention shown in the drawings is attached rigidly thereto. It will be understood, however, that this guard may be constructed in any suitable manner and of any suitable height, and the side pieces extend from the outer end of the platform inwardly and form braces for said platform in addition to providing means for attaching the legs or supports of the ladder thereto.
E E represent the adjusting-bolts, which pass through the slots (2 6, each bolt being provided with a nut or other suitable means for securing the same in the slots. These bolts pass through the adjustable bar D. By loosening the nuts upon the bolts the bar D may be moved laterally, so as to adapt the platform to windows having the window-sills of greater or less width or to buildings having walls of different thicknesses, the length of the slot 6 being sufficient to allow for a range of adjustment which will adapt the platform to all ordinary buildings.
F is a cross-piece or bottom strip which is securely attached to the under side of the platform and is adapted to rest upon the outer part of the window-sill B. Preferably the strip F should be of su'fficient thickness to support the platform in a substantially horizontal position. In the example of my invention shown in the drawings I have shown a strip a at the inner side or end of the platform, and also an under strip 0 These strips are applied merely for the purpose of strengthening the main support or platform and may be dispensed with, if desirable.
G represents the window.
Vhen I use in connection with my ad 3' ustable platform the steps orstep-ladder, which is adapted also to form a guard, this adj ustable'guard is hinged to the outer end of the platform 0, as shown in Fig. 3, by 71. H represents the steps, which are hinged to the upright or rear piece by means of the pivot it. The step-ladder guard is composed of the steps H and the support or back H, the said back or brace being pivoted at the top to the steps H by 7b and pivoted at the base by 7b. hen the step-ladder is used merely as a guard, it is folded into perpendicular position, as shown in Fig. 3 at H, and when not in use the steps H are folded back against H and the whole folded down in close contact {VlhlIl the support 0, the position being shown The above-describcd step-ladder arrange ment is especially useful in connection with long or high windows.
In using my invention the platform is placed in position within the window-opening, the support or strip F resting upon the sill 011 the outer side of the building, the central portion of the platform resting upon the lower case of the window, and the adj ustablc strip D adjusted so as to fit closely against the inside of the window-casing, as shown fully in Fig. 3. hen the strip D has been adjusted to proper position, the nuts E on the bolt are tightened so as to securely retain it in place. A portion of the support 0 then projects outwardly beyond the window-sill, as shown in said Fig. 3, and furnishes a safe and convenient platform for the operator to stand upon in washing windows or for other analogous purposes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to have invented, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a window bracket or platform, the combination with the main platform having means for securing the same to a windowcasing, the portion of the platform which extends beyond the outer side of the windoweasing having secured thereto an upwardlyprojecting end strip and inwardly-projecting side strips; together with a step-ladder, the outer legs of which are pivotally attached adjacent to the outer ends of the side strips the step-section of the ladder being pivoted to and folding within the aforesaid legs, the ladder being maintained in avertical position by engagement with the end strip, substantially as shown.
2. In combination with a window-cleaning platform, of a main platform having rigidly secured thereto, across-piece, said cross-piece extending beyond the sides of the platform and provided with recessed ends, side strips secured to the upper edges of the platform and a cross-strip attached to the outer end thereof, the innerportion of the platformhaving slots, a cross-bar of greater length than the width of the platform and means for securing said cross-bar to the platform; together with a ladder having legs or members pivotally connected to each other, one of the pair of legs being pivotally secured to the upwardlyprojecting side pieces of the platform at a point adjacent to the transverse strip, the parts being organized substantially as shown.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two wit nesses.
ELIJAII II. FISHER.
