ADVERTISING MEDIUM.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent N0. 582,782, dai/GCI. May 18, 1897.
Application led April 13, 1896. Serial No. 587,283. (No model.)
T0 all wiz/07u it #mty concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. GATCHELL, acitizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Advertising Mediums, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in explaining its nature.
The invention relates to the combination in one organization of a cigar-lighting device, a cigar-tip-cutting device, and a movable frame or rack so connected that the operation of the cigar-tip cutter causes the frame to be moved and the lighting device to be operative. It will be understood that the frame is adapted to support advertisements or material of similar nature and thatI its movement is adapted to bring such advertisements or material successively into view.
'I prefer that the frame be in the nature of a rack and have an intermittent rotating movement and that it be supported upon a suitable base and that the apparatus for cutting the cigar-tip be below the frame and the cigar-lighting device be above it, but I do not confine myself to this arrangement of the several parts. Y
In the drawings, Figurel is a view in front elevation of the device, a portion of the rotating rack or support being broken out to represent the construction of the mechanism for turning it. Fig. 2 is a view in vertical section through one edge of the device. Fig. 3 is a detail view in vertical section of the upper part of the device upon the dotted line of Fig. 4, showing especially the cigar-lighting apparatus. Fig. 4 is a view in plan with the cap or top of the device removed. Fig. 5 is a view in horizontal section upon the dotted line of Fig. l and a plan view of parts below said line.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the base, which is preferably made of sheet metal.
B is a frame or rack mounted upon the base by means of an annular rim b, which has the downwardly-extending lip b' to lap upon the outer edge of the upper part of the base, by which it is maintained in place thereon at its bottom, and the flat under surface b2 within the lip, which rests upon rolls b3, cartionary iinger-piece e3;
ried by the base. The upper part of the frame has the annular rim b4, which is within the line of the lower edge h5 of the cap or top A. The frame is adapted to support cards, like pasteboard or thin sheet metal or any other material which may act as a support for the advertisements or other matter to be displayed, and the frame is constructed, preferably, so that these advertisements or their supports may be easily inserted and removed, and I have represented as one form of construction of frame the vertical bars extending from the lower to the upper rim, and the cross-bars b7, connecting the vertical bars, and the cards or supports for the advertisements or other matter are held against the inner sides of these bars by buttons hs, carried by the bars or other suitable fastening devices. The cap A' is 7supported by a stationary frame C, which extends upward from the base and within the frame B, and it is detachably secured to the top of this frame by screws or in any other way, in order that it may be readilyremoved and easy access to the advertising-frame be obtained. It will be understood that the advertising-frame upon the removal of the cap A can be at once lifted from the base. The cigar-tip-cutting device is upon the side of the base A and comprises a plate d, having an opening d', and a cutter D, movable across 'the opening below the plate and formed upon the end of a lever cl2, (see Fig. 4,) which is pivoted at d3 and has the backward-extending arm d4, connected with the main operating-lever E by a link d5. The main operating-lever E is pivoted at e to the top of the base and has an extension or thumb-piece E', which extends through a slot F.2 in the side 0f the base. (See Fig. l.) This thumb-piece preferably is used in connection with a sta- (See Figs. 1 and 5.) This main lever not only operates the cutter, but it also rotates the rack B, and to accomplish this last-named purpose it carries at its inner end a spring-pawl f, which is pivoted at f and is adapted upon the feeding movement of the lever to engage by its point f2 the inner side f3 of the rim b of the rack or frame B, the said rim preferably having a channel in its side, into which the point of the pawl extends. The pawl is always held IOO in its proper engaging relation with the rim by the pin f4 on the end of the main lever. The position of this lever, the pawl, and the tip-cutter at the beginning of the feed movement is represented in full lines in Fig. 5 and their position at the end of each feeding movement by dotted lines in the same iigure. A spring d6 serves to automatically return the main lever and cutter to their original position.
Gis the lighter. l have represented it as a gas-burner surrounded by a shield g and as upon the front side of the cap or top. The gas-burner is supplied by a pipe g', in which is a cock g2, connected by a lever g3 with the upper end g4 of a lever g5, pivoted at gG to the inner stationary frame and having its lower end Q7 extending in line with the main lever E, so that the movement of the said lever also serves to open the gas-cock g2 any desired extent to provide temporarily a larger llame. A spring gs (see Fig. rl) ser'ves to return the two levers g3 and g5 and to partially close the cock. In lieu of the gas-burner described any other burner can be used. To operate the device, the tip of the cigar is placed in the hole cl and the main lever E moved from left to right. This causes the end of the cigar to be clipped and the frame or rack to be turned a portion of a revolution and supplies, temporarily, the burner with an increased flame, and every reciprocation of the main lever will repeat this movement, thereby bringing into View, until the entire frame has been turned, a new section or display of advertising or other matter, while at the same time the entertained or instructed user is either delightfully preparing his Havana for use or lighting it at the flame-fount. In addition to the feeding-pawl at the end of the main lever E there may also be arranged on the lever an abutment f5, which may be pushed by the spring-pawl when it engages the rim against the rim, but on the opposite side from the pawl, so that there is a double engagement during the feeding movement with the rim, one by the pawl and one by the abutment, and this balances the application of the impelling force on the rack and also it reduces friction. The main lever then has a pivoted hole f' of suflicient size to permit slight lateral movement of the lever.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent'of the United States- The combination in an apparatus of the character specied of a base or support, an uncovered intermittently rotated rack or frame having a large number of retaining devices for receiving and retaining pictures or advertising material arranged about a common center upon said support, an interior stationary framework supported by the base, a cap A carried by said frame, the base and cap being combined with the rack as specified, the ci gar-end-clippin g device comprising a plate d having an opening d and a cutter D, the' cigar-lighter comprising a gas-burner and its supply-pipe g', the cock g2 in said pipe, the lever E pivoted at e and having an end extending through a slot in the base, the pawl f carried at the inner end of said lever as speoilied, making engagement as described with the said rotary rack, a link d5 connecting said lever with the cutter-arm d, the lever g5 connecting said lever E with the gascock cl3 and one or more springs to automatically return said lever E and cutter and said cock-lever, as and for the purposes specified.
CHARLES H. GATGHELL.
