FREDERICK R. WVHITE, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
COMBINED ADVERTISING DEVICE AND CIGAR-TIP CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 412,314,, dated October 8,1889.
Application filed January 14, 1889. Serial No- 296,238. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK R. WHITE, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Ad vertising Device and Cigar-Tip Gutter, of which the following isa specification.
It is the purpose of my invention to provide such improvements in combined advertising devices and cigar-tip cutters as will afford liberal or ample space for the card or advertisement to be displayed each time the device is operated to out the tip of the cigar, and at the same time provide a contrivanoe which shall be simple in construction and easy, certain, and convenient of operation.
My invention consists of an outer cylinder or frame provided with an opening at which an advertisement may be displayed, combined with a rotary inner cylinder containing advertiseinents or cards to be displayed at the opening in the outer cylinder, a shaft connected with said inner cylinder, a ratchetwheel on said shaft, a pawl engaging said ratchet-wheel, a lever and connections to operate said pawl, a sliding blade or knife to cut off the cigar-tip, and connections between said knife or blade and lever, whereby when the latter is operated, the former will also be moved, all substantially as is 'herewith de scribed and claimed.
Of the drawings hereto annexed and forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved combined advertising device and cigar-tip cutter complete. Fig. 2 is a top plan view with the bedplate and the cylinders and their adjuncts above the bed-plate removed. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the inner rotary cylinder, a portion being represented as broken out. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view through the entire device. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view of the lower part, taken on the line ,5 5 of Fig. 1.
The same letters of reference designate the same parts in all the views.
I-Ieretofore, so far as I am aware, devices having functions similar to my invention have been so constructed as to afford a very limited space for the display of advertisements, rendering them undesirable as such devices.
By my improvements ample space is afforded for the display of advertisements, and the construction is simple, and the cigar-tipcutting operation is so nearly analogous to what is commonly known and understood as not to necessitate special instructions.
In the drawings, a designates the base, containing most of the operating mechanism.
1) is the bed-plate covering the base, which bed-plate supports an upright stationary cylinder c,within the top of which cylinder and supported by it is a fluid-reservoir (Z and openings or supports for cigarlighters e, which may or may not project into the fluid contained in the reservoir, and thelatter may be surmounted by a burner f, having a wick connected with the fluid in the reservoir, Or it may be a gas-burner connected with a gas supply. In case the latter is used the reser voir d may be employed or not for supplying burning fluid to lighters e. Indeed, the burner and its adj unct-s may be entirely dispensed with without departing from the essential feature of the invention, which has to do with cutting off a'cigar-tip rather than with lighting it, and at the same displaying an advertisement to the view of the operator.
9 designates a rotary cylinder arranged within the cylinder 0, and having its outer surface paneled off into sections corresponding in width to the opening made in the outer cylinder, as will be seen by reference to Fig. 1, an advertisement being shown as being displayed at said opening in said last-mentioned figure.
In case a fluid-reservoir is used, it willentend down inside the top of the rotary cylinder, as well as within the stationary cylinder, though not so as to interfere with the operation of the former.
h is a vertical]y-arran'ged rotary shaft supported in bearings in the base and having its upper end squared or otherwise constructed so as that the inner cylinder 9 may be secured thereto and be turned therewith. w On the shaft h is affixed a ratchet-wheel 2', having teeth in number corresponding to the number of panels or sections into which the cylinder g may be divided. The free end of a pawl j, pivoted to one arm of a bell-crank lever, engages the teeth of said ratchet-wheel i. The bell crank lever is fulcrumed upon a stud 7c in a bracket or other suitable support connected with the base, and has its other arm Z loosely connected with the operating-lever m, normally held upward and raised upward when it is depressed by a spring '12. When, now, said operatin -lever is depressed, it will operate through the medium of the bell-crank lever and pawl to turn the ratchet-disk the distance of one tooth, and consequently move the inner cylinder g just far enough to carry the advertisement at the opening in the outer cylinder around therefrom and bring the next succeeding panel and its advertisement into view at said opening.
An additional ratchet-wheel 0 may beconnected with the ratchet 2', with which ratchetwheel 0 a suitable stop-pawl may be arranged to engage, so as to prevent the momentum given to the cylinder g by the operation of 1 pawl j on ratchet-wheel i from carrying said cylinder too far around. In the present instance I have provided the lever 'm. with an i upwardly-extending arm 19, having a later-5 ally-projecting finger g, which finger, as the operating-lever is depressed, is brought into position to engage one of the teeth of ratchetwheel 0 and stop its rotation with the cylin- 1 der g in exactly proper position, and when. the operating-lever is raised the finger q will be disengaged from the ratchet-wheel 0 and allow it, ratchet-wheel i, and cylinder 9 to be I again turned at the next operation.
0 designates holes, varying in size, if desired, formed in the bed-plate I), through which holes the tip of the cigar may be extended to be cut off by the knife or blade 8, arranged to be reciprocated in ways connected with the base-plate.
The knife or blade 8 is arranged to be reciprocated at each operation of the lever m, and this may be accomplished by connecting said knife with said lever by various means, that here shown being toggle-levers t, pivotally connected at one end with said blade and at the other end with the bed of 'the machine, said levers being connected at the point it, where they are pivotally united, with a lever o, which at its opposite end is pivoted to the arm 70 of the bell-crank lever, so
that each time that the operating-lever m is depressed the toggle-levers twill be operated to move the blade forward in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 2, and cut ofi. the tip of a cigar which maybe extended through one of the holes 7. The parts will be returned to their normal position, as represented in Fig. 4, by the action of spring 91.
w designates a V-shaped knife, which may be affixed to the forward edge of the blade 8, so as to out a V-shaped notch out of the tip of the cigar when it is inserted in one of the holes 0'.
00 is a drawer arranged to slide in ways supported by the base a beneath the holes 7' and knife 8 to catch the cuttings.
It is obvious that changes may be made in the form and arrangement of parts constituting my invention without departing from the nature or spirit thereof. For example, instead of arranging the cylinders in a vertical position they might be arranged horizontally, and other like changes may be made.
Having now described my invention, I declare that what I claim is 1. A combined advertising device and cigartip cutter consisting of an outer stationary cylinder 0, provided with an opening, at or through which an advertisement may be displayed at the opening in the outer cylinder, a shaft connected with said inner cylinder, a ratchet-wheel on said shaft, a pawl engaging said ratchet-wheel, a lever and connections to operate said pawl, a sliding blade or knife to cut off the cigar-tip, and connections between said knife or blade and lever, whereby when the latter is operated the former will also be moved, substantially as set forth.
2. A combined advertising device and cigartip cutter consisting of a bed-plate and casing or support therefor, said bed-plate being provided with openings through which cigartips may be passed, a stationary cylinder provided with an opening supported on the bed-plate, a rotary cylinder arranged within the stationary cylinder, a shaft connected with said rotary cylinder, a ratchet-wheel on said shaft, a pawl engaging said ratchetwheel, a lever .and connections to operate said pawl, a blade arranged to slide beneath the bed-plate and on a line across the holes in said bed-plate, and connections between said knife and blade, whereby when the latter is operated the f )rmer will also be moved, as set forth.
3. In a cigar-tip cutter, the combination, with the cigar-tip-cutting mechanism, of the outer stationary cylinder provided with an opening through which advertisements may be displayed and an inner rotary cylinder containing a series of advertisements to be successively displayed at the opening in the outer cylinder, said inner cylinder being connected with the said cutting mechanism to be operated thereby, substantially as hereinbefore set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 2d day of J anuary, A. D. 1889.
FREDERICK R. WHITE.
