ADVERTISINGDEVIUE. No. 396,290. Patented Jan. 15,1889.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VITO M; POSSE, OF PARIS, FRANCE.
ADVERTISING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 396,290, dated January 15, 1889.
Application filed August 17, 1888 Serial No. 282,982- (No model.) Patented in France March 6, 1888, No. 189,182, in Belgium March 8, 1888, No. 80,926, and in England July 21, 1888, No. 10,596.
To all whom it ntay concern.-
Be it known that I, VITO M. PossE, a subject of the King of Spain, residing at Paris, in the Republic of France, have invented improvements in the apparatuses employed in tobacconists shops, restaurants, cafes, hotels, and other establishments for the application and use of changing or moving illuminated advertisements, (for which I have obtained Letters Patent in France, dated March (.3, 1888, No. 189,182, for fifteen years; in Belgium,
dated March 8, 1888, No. 80,920, for twenty years, and in England, dated July 21, 1888, No. 10,596, for fourteen years;) and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to the application and use of changing or moving illuminated advertisements in apparatuses employed in tobacconists shops, restaurants, cafes, hotels, and other establishments, for the purpose of providing means for lighting cigars, pipes, and so forth; and it consists, essentially, in devices whereby the movement of the lever, button, or other instrument by which the gas-flame or other lighting means is turned up, increased, or otherwise brought into action at the time when it is required to be used, is utilized for the purpose of obtaining the requisite movement or change of the advertisement automatically each time the lighting apparatus is used.
Various meansand devices may be employed for transmitting movement from the aforesaid lever, button, or other instrument to the moving or changing advertisements. The drawings hereto annexed illustrate an arrangement of mechanism which I have found suitable for this purpose.
Figure 1 is a front view of the mechanism.
- Fig. 2 is a side view of same, partly in vertical section, on line 1 2 of Fig. 1; and Fig.3 is a detail view of part of the mechanism.
The apparatus is mounted on a board, a, of
any suitable shape and dimensions. At the upper part may be placed a clock, 0, and at the lower part the lighting or igniting apparatus b, the gas-burner of which may be masked or hidden in a suitable ornamental part, f. The space between the clock and the lighting apparatus is utilized for the advertising apparatus, which is placed behind the frame 6, containing a sheet of glass or other more or less transparent material. The advertisements are printed, painted, or otherwise inscribed on an endless band, i, passing over rollers g g g 9 which receive motion in a definite direction by means of mechanism connected with the device, by which the tap of the gas-burner b is opened and closed more or less in order to increase or decrease the igniting-flame. The rollers g g 9 9 51.113 carried in bearings connected with the vertical edges of an opening in the 'board a. This opening is closed in front by the glazed frame 6, and at the back by a hinged door. One of the said rollers-g, for example-is covered with a sleeve or rings of indiarubber, j, and communicates the required movements to the endless band I. For this purpose its axis carries a toothed pinion, 72, which gears with a toothed wheel, is, fast on an intermediate axis, 0, which carries loose thereon ratchet-wheel, Z, fixed to or formed with a drum, m, the boss of which is acted on by a coiled spring, 0 which is fixed. at its outer end to the board a. Fig. 3 shows that the spuravheel it is furnished with a pawl, Z, which transmits to the said spurwheel the forward movements imparted to the ratchet-wheel by the rod 00 of the lighting apparatus. A spring, Z retains the pawl. Z in contact 'with the teeth of the ratchetwheel. The rod cc slides endwise in suitable guides, and is connected at its upper end to the drum m by a chain or cord, n, and acts during its up and down movements on the le ver or handle 1) of the gas-tap 1) either directly or by means of other intermediate devices.
The action of the apparatus is as follows: Vhen the gas-burner b is not being used, its flame is turned down, so as to be very small. By pulling down the rod 00 the tap p is opened, more or less, and the flame is increased proportionally, so as to supply suitable means of ignition to the user. This movement of the rod 00 produces automatically a change of the advertisement visible at the frame e-that is to say, the descent of the rod 0/; draws round the drum 'm by means of the chain or cord 12 The ratchetrwheel Z acts on the pawl Z, and thereby forces the spur-wheel 7a to rotate in the same direction and to turn the pinion 7t,
and thereby the roller g, whereby the endless band 13 is moved a certain distance, causing a fresh advertisement to appear at the frame 6 in place of that which was visible there before the gas was turned up. \Vhen the rod 00 is released, the spring 7* returns the drum 1):, ratchetwheel Z, and rod 00 to their normal positions, which has the effect of closing the gas-tap p to the extent necessary for reduc ing the flame to the required degree.
It will be readily understood that if the lighting apparatus is fitted with an electric igniter, instead of a gas-burner, the rod 01: or other analogous instrument will be caused to act upon suitable devices for closing an electric circuit, instead of operating the lever or handle of a gas-tap.
I claim 1. In an advertising and lighting apparatu s,
the combination, with the igniting device and a button or handle for operating the same to produce or increase the flame or spark, of movable advertisements carried by suitable supports, mechanism for moving the same to bring different inscriptions into view, and connections between said handle and mechanism whereby the movement of the handle for lighting purposes is communicated to said mechanism to move the advertisements, substantially as set forth.
2. In an ad\-'ertising and lighting apparatus, the combination, with a gas-burner and a handle for regulating the supply of gas to the same, of movable advertisements carried by suitable supports, mechanism for moving the same to bring different inscriptions into view, and connections between said handle and mechanism whereby the movement of the handle for lighting purposes is communicated to said mechanism to move the advertisements, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
