MECHANICAL ADVERTISING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
'PatentedJune 13, 1916.
Application filed November 17, 1915. Serial No. 61,869;
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, MAX Tnun'rzsorinnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Bridgeport, county of Fairiield, State of Connecticut, have invented certaln new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Advertising Devices; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Wlll enable others skilled in the art to which it appen;
tains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in mechanical advertising devices and particularly to such de{ vices adapted for performing tricks on the magician style.
The primary object of the invention is to provide an efiicient device or mechanism of the above characterfor'operating automativ cally to display and remove from display, alternately, any desired article such as an advertisement.
The invention further resides in providing a table, or other support, with an article removably disposed thereon, a figure, such as a man, arran ed by the table, and mechanism for associating the movements of the figure with those of the article whereby to resemble a magician performing an act. 7
Further, the invention resides in the salient features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described and.
claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings wherein: Y
Figure 1 is a front elevation of theiimproved advertising device with the front wall removed to show the working mechanism; Fig. 2 shows, in pictures, the sequence of operations in the magical appearance and disappearance of the article; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1 through the working mechanism; Fig. 4 is a vertical section on line 14: of Fig. 1 disclosing the table and mounting for the display article; Fig. 5 is a similar view taken about on line 5-5 of Fig. 1 showing the figure and it operating mechanism in elevation; Fig. 6 is a rear elevation of the device illustrating the drive for the working mechanism; Fig. 7 is a transverse section through the table on line 7-7 of Fig. 4; and Fig. 8 is a detailed fragmentary section of the mechanism for actuating an arm of the human figure.
The mechanical advertising device is conveniently housed in a casing 1 having a platform 2 designed to represent a stage and also to conceal the operating or working mechanism, the walls 3 of thecasing being suitably decorated as the stage background.
On'the stage is a human figure 4, dressed to resemble a magician, a table 5 and a screen 6. 'The table has a central opening 7 and between its legs 8 are mirrors 9 'angularly related and intended to reflect the screen for giving the impression that the observer is looking between the table legs at the back i of the screen.
The display or advertising article is here shown as a bottle 10 secured to a cap plate 11 of a vertically movable rod 12 and adapted to be projected through the table opening 7, to appear as being seated on the table, or
withdrawn to be hidden by the mirrors 9'.
In the compartment 13, below the stage,
the operati-ng'mechanism is supported on a base plate 14 upward from which extend standards 15 having bearings 16 for the shaft 17. On one standard is a fixed bracket 18'to' which is pivoted a follower lever-19 carrying a follower roller 20 on one end and having its opposite end guided in a vertical I double cam 24 having oppositely'extending throw portions 25 arranged in alternation, each throw portion including a long rest section 26. Straddling the double cam 2 1 for. cooperation therewith is the forked end 27 of a lever 28 pivoted between its ends for oscillatory movement on a standard 29, the opposite end of said lever carrying a segmental gear 80 for rotating a gear 31 with which it meshes. This gear 31 is provided with a pair of pins 82 for interlocking in corresponding slots formed in the lower end of a tubular and rotatable pedestal or shaft 33. A disk 84:, fixed to the upper end of shaft 33, has the left foot 35 of the toy figure l secured thereto whereby on rotation of the shaft the figure will turn, the right foot being free of the platform 2 to movewith the figure. The throw of th'edouble cam is suflicient to turn the figure approximately one quarter turn, from a full front to a side position and vice versa, as depicted in Fig. 2.
A stand 36 on the base plate 14 is formed with a bearing shoulder 37 which supports the gear 31 and its shaft 33 for rotation. An integral rod 38 extends upwardly from the stand through the gear and shaft and also the left leg of the toy figure terminating within the hollow body of the latter. On this terminal of the rod 38 is fixed an angular arm 39 which, when the toy figure is turned, will be engaged by a crank arm 40 of a rock shaft 41 journaled in a shoulder bearing 42, said bearing having the left arm 43 of the toy figure secured to the outer end thereof. The arms 39 and 40 are so related that the latter will ride up or along the former and, consequently, swing the arm of the toy figure from a vertical to substantially a horizontal position. In the hand of the swinging arm is carried a placard or shield 44, upon which may be arranged suitable advertising matter, as shown in Fig. 2, the function of such placard being to hide or conceal the table top from view during the projection and withdrawal of the bottle for rendering the operation magical in appearance.
The cams 23 and 24 are so positioned and related that the figure is turned and the placard elevated to hide the table before the bottle is initially moved to or from a display position. I I
Assuming the parts to be in the position designated A, Fig. 2, inwhich the cam 23 is retaining the bottle elevated. Upon rotation of the shaft 17, the double cam will oscillate the lever 28 thereby rotating the toy figure to face the table during which movement the coacting arms 39 and 40 will swing the arm and placard or concealing element 44 to the position shown at B. While the fork 27 is riding on rest portion 26, the follower 2O rides off cam 23 and,
thus, lowers the bottle behind the mirrors 9. The fork then rides off one cam portion to an opposite throw cam portion, returning the figure and arm, with its placard, to normal position indicated at C. Continued rotation of the shaft moves the figure to the position at D where the follower 20 rides onto cam 23 and elevates the bottle after which the figure is lowered and the appearance will be as indicated at A. i
For rotating the shaft 17, a gear 45 is fixed thereon with which meshes a Worm 46 carried on a transverse shaft 47, the latter being journaled in a bearing 48 of standard 49 and also in the rear wall of the casing 1. On the projecting end of shaft 47 is fixed a gear 50 having a handle 51 for manual rotation, as for demonstration purposes, the preferable drive for exhibition being a motor, not shown, connected with a pulley 52 'fixed on a counter shaft 53. The latter is provided with a worm 54 adapted to mesh with the gear 50. The shaft 53 is swingingly mounted in a bearing 55, and the worm is retained in meshing relation with the gear by a fixed bearing 56 supporting the shaft 53, said fixed bearing being removable whereby the worm may be swung out of mesh with gear 50 to permit of manual rotation of the latter. The pivotal hearing is supported by a stop 57 when the worm 55 is out of mesh with gear 50.
It is, of course, understood that any desired article may be substituted for the bottle 10 and various other changes made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
