Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. '15, 1908.
Application filed. May 21, 1908, Bed-a1 No. 434,185.
To all ivho'm it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES T. WrLKs, a citizen of the United States, residing at .Woodlawn, in the county of Jefferson and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Advertisement Devices; and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description .of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the .art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in advertisement devices, and the object of my invention is to rovide a cabinet for holding toilet paper w 'ch will automatically illuminate an advertisement and change advertisement as the handle is turned to deliver the 8. er from the cabinet or receptacle.
ith this object in view, my invention consists in the construction and combinations of parts as'hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing-Figure 1 is a. front view of my device, the lower.
right hand corner. being broken away. Fig. 2 1s a side view of the same, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a cross section of a modified form. Fig. 4 is a detailed sectional view on a larger scale, showing the electrical contact means,
and Fig. 5 is a side view, partly in section, showing a spring contact arm and related parts.
a re resents a casing or cabinet having a front hinged thereto, and havin ears such as c by which the cabinet may be astened to the wall in any convenient position. Within the cabinet are brackets d for holding the shaft 6 of the paper carrying roll. Below the paper roll are located four rollers f g,h, and i, around which the strip 1' carrying the adver tisements passes. This strip is made of any suitable transparent or translucent material, such as tracing paper, for example, carrying the advertisements. Opposite the rollers g and h respectively, are guide rollers k and m, the four rollers g, h, k, and 111- being covered with felt.
'n represents an idler roller which is pressed by the spring 0 against the strip j,-thereby ways keeping it tight. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the strip p of the paper passes downwardly'from the roll between the rollers g and k, and then between V ms ale of glass or similar material.
the rollers h and m, in front ,of the window 9,
Behind the strip 9' is an incandescent electric lamp 1', connected by wires .9 and t to the battery it. The axle y of the roller m ex tends out through the casing a and is pro vided with an operating hand wheel -v.
w represents a wire leading from one of the binding posts of the incandescent lamp to a spring arm at, which is ada ted to contact with the axle y of the ro er m. This axle is provided with one or more insulating portions 2, so that when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. l, the circuit will be broken and the lamp extinguished, thus 'tNITEDs ATESPA F 7 i I preventing the battery from running down."
- In Fig. 3 a modification is shown, practically the only difference being that the strip of paper p asses down in the rear of .the lamp inst-eat of in front of it, and of course themotion of the strip 7' is in the opposite direction to what it is in the form shown in Fi 1.
'lhe, operation is as follows: The parts be ing in the position shown in Fig. 4, the user turns the hand wheel 1;, thus closing the circuit between the battery and the electric lamp, which is thereupon illuminated, ren dering risible the advertisement as shown in Fig- 1. A further turn of the handlev brings the arm a into contact with one of the sections y, interrupting the circuit and extinguishing the lamp, thus preventin the strength of the battery from running down, owing to constant use.
I c aim:-
1. The combination of a cabinet, a trans- I parent window, a roll of paper movably su orted therein, a series of guide rollers located elovr ssid paper roll, an advertisement carrying strip, passing around some of said rollers, an operating hand wheel fixed on the axle of one of said rollers, an electric lamp, a circuit leading through said lam and the axle of the roller carrying the ham wheel, and means whereby the movement or said hand wheel automatically opens and closes the circuit leading to said lamp, substantially as described. 2. The combination of a cabinet provided with a transparent window, a roll of paper movs'oly supported in the up er art of said cabinet, 3 series of guide rol ers ocated below said paper roll, an advertisement strip passizg around some of said rollers, a spring PIESSEQ idler roller bearing against said stri some of said rollers being provided with is t covers, and one of said rollers having its axle I In testimony whereof, l afiix my signature,
pro'ecting through the casing and provided wit a hand wheel, an electric lamp located behind said window, an electric cn'cuit for 5 said lam and means whereby the operation of said fiend Wheel alternately o ens and closessaid circuit, substantially as eccri bed.
