Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIo-Ec A. A. MARKS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CARD-HOLDER.
Spcciiieation forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,270, dated September .25, 1.866.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, AMASA A. MARKS, of the city, county, and State ot' New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Card-Racks for Holding and Exhibiting Business and other Cards; and I do `hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description ot1 the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon,` in Which- Figure 1 is a plan View, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken through the center of one of the holdingdisks- The object otl my invention is to secure, by means of a suitable holding-disk, the holding in place of one card, or ot' a number ot' cards, between `the plate of the rack and the inner side ot' the holding-disk, the said holding disk being held in contact with the card or cards inserted between it and the said plate by asuitable arrangement of springs, so that the single card or a number of cards can be held securely in place for exhibition or preservation. y
A is the plate ot' the rack, made ot' any suit' able material, of such size as may be required.
""B B are rings by which the same may be sus pended in position; or the plate may be permanently secured in place by being nailed or otherwise fastened toa wall or partition. C are the holding-disks, in number proportioned to the size of the plate A, the distances between them in width and height being a little greater than the length and width of the cards to be held and exhibited, so that the card or cards held by one disk shall not interfere or be in the way ot the disks above and by the side of it.
These disks may be made of any suitable material; but a button madeotl metal, W'ood, ivory, pearl, or india-rubber, having a ilat surface on its under side and an eye inserted or secured in it-such as ordinarily used for garm entswill answer an excellent purpose.
An aperture is made through the face of the plate A sufficiently large to admit of the free movement through it of the eye of the disk C and its attached holding-wire D. This wire is inserted into and securedu-pon the washer E, as shown.
The aperture before named is enlarged from the back of the plate A to a sufficient depth and diameter to receive the washer E and its operation spring F, thelatter being inserted between the under side of the head of the washer and the bottom ot the aperture named to receive it. i
y The spring is made sutcien tly elastic to hold the disk C in position either against the plateA or against a number of cards equal in thickness to the distance o t the movement of the Washer-l1ead from` the back of the plate. rlhis spring may be made of metal in the form of Wire wound in a spiral form, or of india-rubi-ber, or ot' any other material that will effect D the purpose.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the holding-disk C with the spring F, to actuate the same, as and for the purpose set forth.
