F. MERREM.
SIGHT FOR FIREARMS.
No. 582,660. Patented May 18, 1897.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANZ MERREM, OF IAIOMBURG, GERMANY.
SIGHT FOR FIREARIVIS.
` SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 582,660, dated May 18, 1897.
Application filed December 6,1895l Serial No. 571,228. (No model.) Patented in England-'November 15, 1895,No. 21,745; in Belgium November 16,1895, No.118,496; in France November 16, 1895, No. 251,756; in Switzerland December 20,1895, No. 11,656; in Italy December 30, 1895, LXXIX, 291; in Austria January 24, 1896, No. L16/291, and in Germany April 25,1896, No. 86,516, and June 8,1896, No.87,117.
T all whom, it 11i/ay con/061%:
Be it known that I, FRANZ MEEEEM, Royal Ranger at Homburg-vor-der-I-Ihe, Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sights for Firearms, (for which'I have obtained foreign Letters Patent as follows: In England, No. 21,7415, dated November 15, 1895; in Belgium, No. 118,496, dated November 16, 1895; in France, No. 251,756, dated November 16, 1895; in Switzerland,No.11,653, dated December 20, 1895 in Italy,No.LXXIX, 291, dated December 30, 1895; in Austria, No. 16/291, dated January 24 1896, and in Germany, No. 86,516, dated April 25, 1896, and No. 87,117, dated June 8, 1896,) of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to improve the front and eventually the back sights of firearms of the character having two surfaces which may be alternately used when aiming at light or dark objects or when used in weak or strong daylight. For this purpose one of the two surfaces is light and the other dark, and more especially I use for the light surface an inclined plane of light color showing upward and thereby receiving more light than a vertical one, and for the dark surface an inclined black plane showing downward in order to keep it from direct light in perpetual shade. Both surfaces are so arranged on the sight that either may be presented to the eye of the marksman.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown how my invention is carried out in a front sight and a back sight.
Figures 1 and 2 are elevations of a front sight in two different positions, the bed-plate in section. Fig. 3 is a plan View. Figs. 4 and 5 are two elevations of a back sight. Fig. 6 is a plan view.
The front sight consists of a rhomboid block A, which is covered by an ivory plate or one of mother-of-pearl, silver, or the like a at its light oblique surface, while the dull one is blackened. The block A is mounted by a pin Bin the bed-plate C and kept in position by a flat forked spring D, pressing downward against the head of the pin B. The bottom of the block A rests in a shallow embasement in the bed-plate and may be turned, lifting it by two fingers.
The back sight (shown in Figs. 4 to 6) consists of a prism G of triangular section and rotatably fixed on an anis g.
The light surface which is used in combination with the black one of the front sight, has preferably only a light band at the upper edge, formed by the section of the plate g2 and preferably of the same breadth as the depth of the notch g3 cut in the edge.
A triangle g4 may be provided, as usual, marking by its point the lowest point of the notch g3.
Now what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is the following:
1. A movable sight for firearms having two inclined planes one of which is dark, showing downward, and the other light, showing upward, substantially as set forth and means for holding the sight with either of said planes forward.
2. A sight for firearms having two parallelV inclined planes one of which is light and the other dark, in combination with a bed-plate, a pin adapted to rotate in said bed-plate and a spring bearing against the head of said pin, substantially as set forth.
3. In a sight for firearms, the combination with a rhomboid block light on one surface and dark on the other and adapted to be turned to bring the light or the dark surface toward the marksman at will, of a bed-plate having a shallow embasement, a pin upon which said block is mounted and a iiat forked spring adapted to press against the head of said pin, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANZ MERREM.
Witnesses RICHARD Win'rn, OAEL ROTH.
