Lou/ 6 UNIT STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS ORGE, or GRAND RAPIDS, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR or ONE-HALF TO L. F. KNOX, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MINNESOTA.
GUN-SIGHT.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 688,194, dated December 3, 1901. Application filed May 20,1901. Serial No. 61,103. (No model.)
To a-ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS ORGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Itasca and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gun-Sights; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to gun-sights.
The object of the invention is to provide a front sight for guns which shall be simple of construction, durable in use, and comparatively inexpensive of production and which is provided with sight-beads of contrasting colors, which may be quickly brought into use to suit certain conditions. For instance, when the ground is covered with snow a white head is of no value and it is desirable to use one of darker shade-such, for instance, as a gold bead-while on a dark cloudy day a brass bead is preferable, but is of very little value when the sun shines, for the reason that it blurs, and on clear days, when no snow is on the ground, I prefer to use a white bead. To obtain these beneficial results, hunters heretofore have been required to carry differw cut sights, which are placed upon the gun as the conditions may require. It takes considerable time and labor to adjust these sights, and it is one of the objects of this invention to provide a sight which may be quickly adjusted to suit the conditions of affairs.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a front view of my improved gun-sight. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a verticalsectional view, and Fig. t is a similar view taken at right angles to Fig. 3.
Referring to thedrawings, 1 denotes the base of the sight, having parallel lips 2, provided with apertures 3 and 4, the former being smooth and of less diameter than the latter and the latter being screw-threaded. 5 denotes a hub mounted between said lips and provided with radiating arms 6, havingtapering heads 7, the forward ends of which are provided with beads of different shades and the rear ends of which are tipped with corresponding colors. This hub is held in place by a screw 8, a portion 9 of which is smooth and of less diameter than the diameter within the screw-threaded portion 10. This screw passes through the forward lip, the hub, and the rear lip and its enlarged screw-threaded portion engages with the screw-threaded aperture of the forward lip. By removing the screw either one of the different beads may be brought into use in a short space of time, thus rendering it unnecessary to carry an assortment of sights to meet the difierent condit-ions of the weather.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, mode of operation, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and details of construction maybe made with: in the scope of the invention without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A gun-sight consisting of a base having parallel, upwardly-projecting lips, one of which is provided with a screw-threaded aperture and the other with an alining smooth aperture, and a hub arranged between said lips and having an aperture adapted to aline with the apertures aforesaid and provided with arms having longitudinallyarranged, truncated, frusto-conical beads of contrasting shades which are adapted to be displayed above the upper ends of the lips, and a pin inserted through the apertures of the hub and lips and provided with a notched, screwthreaded head to engage the screw-threads of the aperture of one of the said lips whereby when the screw-threaded head is disengaged from the screw-thread of the said. aperture, my hand in presence of two subseribihg witthe pin may be quickly slid from engagement nesses. with the hub and the hub chan ed to present a head of a difierent color ov er and above LOUIS ORGE' 5 the ends of the said lips, substantially as set Witnesses:
forth. GEO. F. MEYERs,
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set 0. H. STILSQN.
