Description

(No Model 5 J. M. HORN. STOVEPIPB JOINT.
No. 582,848. Patented May 18,1897.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JEREMIAQH M. HORN, OF ARBA, INDIANA.
STOVEPIPE-JOINT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 582,646, dated May 18, 1897.
Application tiled January 16l 1896. Serial No. 575,748. (No model.)
To all wltmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEREMIAH M. HORN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Arba, in the county of Randolph and Sta-te of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Stovepipe-Joint, of which the following is a speciication.
The invention relates to improvements in stovepipe-joints.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of stovepipe-joints and to enable two sections of a stovepipe to be readily connected and adjusted on each other to avoid cutting and tting to make the stovepipe of the desired length.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of a stovepipe constructedv in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the opposite side thereof. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the adjustable joint. l
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 and 2 designate stovepipe-sections telescoped into each other to vary the length of the stovepipe to adjust the same to the desired length, and sections 1 and 2 are rigidly secured at the desired adjustment by a band 8, carried by one of the sections and engaging the other section.
The band may be of any desired diameter to suit that of the stovepipe to which it is applied, and it is provided at one side with an extension or lug et, which is riveted or otherwise secured to the adjacent end of the stove! pipe-section 1. The lug extends outward beyond the end of the section 1, and the band is also located beyond the same.
The terminals of the band, which are disposed diametrically opposite the lug and which are located adjacent to the seam of the stovepipe, are bent outward and perforated to form ears 5, and are connected by an ad-y j usting screw or bolt 6, which has its head engaging one of the terminals of the band and its nut engaging the other. The adjustable band may be constructed of any suitable inaterial, and the terminals thereof may be supported by reinforcing-plates, if desired.
The adjustable band is supported adjacent to the ad j usting-screw by a link 7, secured at one end of the section 1 of the stovepipe, and provided at its other end with an eye 8, arranged between the terminals of the band and receiving the adjusting screw -or bolt. The link is provided at its end which is secured to the stovepipe-section 1 with an eye for the reception of a rivet or other suitable fastening device. v
' It will be seen that the stovepipe-joint is exceedingly simple and inexpensive in construction, that it is capable of readily securing two sections of a stovepipe at any desired adjustment to avoid cutting to make the stovepipe the desired length, and that it may be readily applied to all kinds and sizes of stovepipes and similar tubing.
Changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
What I claim is- The combination of two telescoping pipesections 1 and 2, an adjustable band located beyond the section 1 and engaging the section 2, a lug located intermediate of the ends of the band, extending from the same and permanently secured to the pipe-section 1, a screw or bolt adjustably connecting the terminals of the band and located at a point opposite said lug, and a link permanently secured at one end to the pipe-section 1, extending beyond the same and provided with an eye located between the terminals of the band and detachably receiving the screw or bolt, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aiiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
J EREMIAH IVI. HORN.
. Vitnesses:
