To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDERICK S. KRETSIN- GER, a resident of Fort Madison,in the county of Lee, State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scythe- Braces, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates toa brace for scythes, and seeks to provide a simple and effective construction which may be conveniently applied to ascythe and snath and by which these parts are strengthened when used for mowingheavy grass, weeds, bushes, the.

The invention consists in the features set forth in the following description, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side View of a scythe and snath with my improved brace applied in position. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the brace detached.

The brace comprises a split clamping-band 10, the ends of which are provided with the perforated projecting wings or lugs 11. Through the perforations of the wings or lugs extends a bolt 12, upon the end of which is threaded a nut 13. The head of the bolt is preferably provided with a nail-hole by which the bolt may be adjusted. The band is pro vided with a stem or rod section 15, preferably formed in one piece therewith and downwardly projecting at a suitable angle. A rodsection 16 is provided with a bent, headed, or enlarged outer end 17. The inner end of the rod-section 16 and the stem or rod section 15 are provided with right and left handed screw-threads and are adj ustably connected by a turnbuckle 18 of ordinary construction.

The brace is applied in position by'clamping the band 10 upon the outer or larger end of the snath 19 and adjusting the same to proper position. Since the band is split or formed with an opening, it may be securely clamped upon snaths of Various sizes. The scythe 20 is fixed upon the end of the snath 19 in the usual manner and the rod-section 16 passed through ahole formed in the scythe. The inner end of the rod-section 16 is then secured to the stem or rod section 15 and conveniently placed under proper tension by the Serial No. 64,221. (No model.)

It will thus be seen that the improved brace comprises two separate rod-sections, one of which may be conveniently and adjustably secured to scythe-snaths of different sizes by means of a split ring fixed thereto, and the other of Which sections may be conveniently passed through a hole in the scythe-blade and held in proper position by the headed or enlarged end, together with a threaded turnbuckle by which the adjaoent ends of the two sections may be adj ustably connected and by which the brace-rod may be placed under the desired tension to rigidly connect the snath and its blade. It will also be observed that the improved brace has two separate and distinct adj ustments-first, the split ring, by which the brace may be properly positioned upon any scythe, and, second,the turnbuckle, by which the brace-rod may be placed under tension after the brace has been secured in position.

It is obvious that the details of construction may be varied without departure from the essentials of the invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A scythe-brace comprising separate rodsections, means for securing one of said sections to the scythe-snath at an angle thereto and means for securing the other of said sections to the scythe-blade, and a threaded turnbuckle arranged to adj ustably connect the adjacent free ends of said rod-sections, whereby said brace may be placed under proper tension.

2. A scythe-brace comprising separate rodsections, one of which is provided with means for securing it to the scythe-snath and the other of which is provided with means for securing it to the scythe-blade, one of said rodsections being adjustable in position and a threaded turnbuckle arranged to adjustably connect the adjacent free ends of said rod-sec tions, whereby said brace may be placed under proper tension.

3. A scythe-brace, comprising separate rodsections, a split band to which one of said sec-;

tions is fixed at an angle and by which said section may be adj ustably secured to scythesnaths of diiferent sizes, means for securing the other of said rod-sections to the scytheblade and a threaded turnbuckle arranged to adjustably connect the adjacent free ends of said rod-sections, whereby said brace may be conveniently placed under tension.

4. A scythe-brace comprising separate rodsections, means for securing one of said rodsections to the scythe-snath at an angle thereto, the other of said sections being adapted to pass through a hole in the scythe-blade and provided with a bent, enlarged, headed end for securing the same in position and a turn buckle arranged to adj ustably connect the adjacent free ends of said rod-sections, whereby said brace may be placed under tension.

5. Ascythe-brace,comprisingseparate rodsections, a split band to which one of said rodsections is formed in piece at an angle thereto and by which said section may be adjustably secured to scythe-snaths of different sizes, the other of said rod-sections being adapted to pass through a hole in the scythe-blade and provided with a bent, headed or enlarged end by which it is secured in position and a threaded turnbuckle to adj ustably connect the adjacent free ends of said rod-sections, where- I by said brace may be placed under tension.

6. The combination with a scythe-blade and snath therefor, of a brace comprising separate rod-sections, one of which is provided with means for securing it to said snath and the other with means for securing it to said blade, one of said sections being adjustable in position, and a threaded turnbuckle arranged to adjustably connect the adjacent free ends of said rod-sections, whereby said brace may be placed under tension to rigidly connect said snath and blade.

7. The combination with a scythe-blade and snath therefor, of a brace comprising separate rod-sections, a split band to which one of said sections is fixed at an angle and by which it may be adjustably secured in position upon the outer end of said snath, the other of said sections being adapted to pass through a hole in the scythe-blade and provided with a headed or enlarged outer end by which it is secured in place and a threaded turnbuckle arranged to adjustably connect the adjacent free ends of said rod-sections, whereby the brace may be placed under proper tension to rigidly connect the snath and blade.
