SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 582,637, dated May 18, 1897.

To all whom, it may concern:

Beitknown that I, JAMES VICTOR GARRETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Crawfordville, in the county of Taliaferro and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reversible Mops or Scrubbing-Brushes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention has relation to reversible or duplex mops; and the object is to provide a cheap, simple, and convenient device of this kind.

To this end the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings the same figures of reference indicate the same parts of the invention.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved mop or scrubbing-brush. Fig. 2 is a central transverse section of the same.

1 1 represent longitudinal bolts which pass through the outer ends of a series of parallel bars 2 2, between which is clamped the scrubbing material3, which projects equally above and below the bars to form plane scrubbingsurfaces 4 4c.

5 5 represent the usual nut-s, secured on the opposite projecting ends of the bolts 1 1.

6 is the handle, its lower end pivoted on the bolt 1 between the contiguous ends of the cen tral bars 2' 2, which are rabbeted at 7 to receive it.

8 8 are pointed teeth on the contiguous faces of the bars 2 2 and serve to assist in holding the material in place.

9 9 are inwardly-convergin g braces, the outer ends of which are pivoted on the ends of the bolt 1 under the nuts 5 5, and their converging inner ends are removably secured to the handle 6 by a bolt 10, passing through one of a series of holes 12 in said handle.

It will readily be understood that by changing from one of the holes 12 to another the angle of the handle with reference to the working face of the brush can be changed at will, which has the effect of raising or lowering the handle to correspond to the height of the person using it.

The operation of the device will readily be understood from the above, taken in connection with the drawings, and it will be seen that after one of the plane scrubbing-faces has been worn away the handle can be reversed to present the opposite side for use.

Although I have specifically described the construction and relative arrangement of the several elements of my invention, I do not desire to be confined to the same,as such changes or modifications may be made as clearly fall within the scope of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s

As an improved article of manufacture, a brush comprising the transverse parallel bars 2 2, the longitudinal parallel bolts 1 1 extending through said bars and threaded on the outer ends to receive the clamping-nuts 5 5, and the scrubbing material 4 secured between said bars, in combination with the adjustable handle 6 pivoted at one end on the bolt 1 between the central contiguous bars 2 2, and provided with the series of transverse orifices 12, the inwardly-converging braces 9, having their outer ends pivoted to the ends of the bolt 1, and their inner ends adjustably secured by the bolt 10, to one of the series of orifices 12 in the handle 6, substantially as shown and described.
