UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL SOLOMON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO v JOSEPH J. (JOHN, OF SAME PLACE.
POCKET CIGARETTE-MAKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 582,489, dated May 11, 1897.
I Application filed July 9, 1896. Serial No. 598,516. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LSAMUEL SOLOMON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket Cigarette- Makers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to an improved pocket folding cigarette-making device; and the object is to provide a device of this character which may be conveniently carried in the pocket, which is always ready for use, which is effective in operation, simple in construction, and inexpensive to manufacture, and which at all times is supplied with a quantity of tobacco.
The invention also provides a means for retaining a moistener used for moistening the cigarette-paper.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pocket folding cigarettemaking device embodying my invention, the same being shown as ready to begin the operation of rolling a cigarette. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are transverse sections of the same, showing the device in the position it will assume dur ing the process of forming and completing a cigarette.
A A designate, respectively, two sections of a box hinged together at a and adapted to fold one upon the other, the section marked A having arranged within it the parts which operate to form the cigarette and the section marked A being designedto carry the material from which the cigarette is to be formed.
Two arms B are pivoted to the inner sides of the section A, and their free ends project over into the section A and carry a roller B, which extends across the whole width of the section A, and the ends of this roller B travel in guideways b, arranged at each side of the section A, as already shown in the drawings.
0 is a band of silk or other suitable fabric, one end of which is fastened to the section A, and passingover the roller B has its other end fastened to a bridge-piece D, arranged within the section A.
Immediately above the bridge-piece D and extending across the entire width of the section A is a spring-retained moistenin g device, herein shown as a hinged plate E, -'provided at its inner or free end with a pad, upon the under side of which any desired moistening or adhesive material may be spread, which, when the plate E is depressed by the finger, will apply a sufficient quantity to the edge of the paper underneath it to properly secure the cigarette. I
In practice I place upon the band C a leaf of cigarette-paper 0, (shown clearly in Fig. 1,) in one end of which a sufficient quantity of tobacco is placed to form a cigarette. The section A is then moved to fold over upon the section A. The arms B and their connected roller B draw the band 0, thus giving to the paper 0 a revolving motion, thus wrapping around itself and securely folding the tobacco within it, a complete closing of the two sections A A being sufficient to roll the paper its entire length, when the adhesive or moistening material, having been previously applied to the edge of the paper, fastens to its body. Thus the operation of forming a cigarette is completed.
The advantages of my invention will be apparent, and the arrangement of the section A so that a quantity of tobacco can always be carried in it will be of great convenience to the user.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with the sections A A, the former having arranged within ita band C, a bridge-piece D and spring-retained moistener E, of a roller B carried in arms B pivoted to the section A, and working in guideways 19, arranged at each side of the section A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 6th day of July, 1896.
SAMUEL SOLOMON.
