Description

A. FRENCH.
Lantern.
'Nm 58,244. A Patented Sept. 25, 1866.
N. PETERS. Hwwulhognphtr. WM 0.0,
NITED ST TES PATENT OFFICE.
ALONZO FRENCH, or PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
iMPROVEMENT IN LANTERNSI Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,244, dated September 25, 1866.
To all whom it may concern: 4
Be it known that I, ALoNzo FRENCH, of the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Lanterns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention consists in constructing or dividing the base G of a lantern in longitudinal sections, and forming a screw-thread, b, on the same, onto which an outer case or shell, B, is screwed, and in passing the guardqvires a a, 850., through the top I) and fixing their ends to the base.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will proceed to' describe its construction and operation.
The accompanying drawing is an elevation with the shell or outer case, B, partly in sec tion, showing the inner case or globe-base G.
Ais the lantern. B is the outer case or shell surrounding the globe-base O, as shown, which the outer case, B, is screwed off the base 0 which, being in sections and held together, relatively by the guard-wires, flies open, leaving the globe free to be removed.
Lanterns as now constructed make it impossible to remove the globe for cleaning or to replace in case of fracture, The guard-wires a a, 870., are now soldered to the cap or top D; but they become loose by the cap heating and melting the solder. By my method of passing them through the cap and fixing their ends to the base no such failure can happen.
Instead of forming a screw on the body of base 0, and also to more firmly bind thesections of it together, I cut a groove in the exterior surface of it, into which a wire, answering all the ends of a screw-thread, fits and cor responds to the screw formed in the shell B.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The globe-base O and the shell or case B, combined and operating substantially as herein specified and described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto sign my name to this specification in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALONZO FRENO H.
