O. M. ALLEN. STOVE.
No. 581,974. Patefited May 4, 1897'.
81 l wewtoz Arnr FI IQQ CHARLES M. ALLEN, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
STOVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581 ,9'74, dated May 4, 1897. Application filed November 27, 1896. Serial No. 613,475. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES M. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Stoves; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to certain improvements in stoves. It is especially adapted for use upon stoves and ranges where cooking is carried on.
It consists in a separable movable top and means for operating it, so that an opening may be exposed in the top of the stove or range for the introduction of fuel without the removal of articles which may be cooking thereon.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is aview of my stove, the front portion being opened out. Fig. 2 is a detail of the operating device with the track cut away at the end. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section through the front end of the stove with a portion of the roller flattened to lock it when closed. Fig. 4 is'a section taken at right angles to Fig. 2.
A is the stove or range, of any suitable or desired construction, having the top B 13, containing the holes with the covers, movable for the reception of pots and other cooking utensils.
The part B of the top is made stationary, and the part B is horizontally movable. In the present case I have shown the part B provided with arms 0, which are fixed to it and extend alongin guides or channels upon each side beneath the part B. In conjunction with these guides are tracks or surfaces D, which are supported and move upon rollers D, and toothed racks E, which are adapted to be engaged by toothed pinions E. These rollers and pinions are fixed upon a shaft F, extending across the stove or range in any convenient position transversely to the line of movement of the movable top B, so that the pinions will engage with the toothed racks.
Upon either end of the pinion-shaft, as most convenient, is provision for the application of a crank G or other appliance by which the pinions may be turned, and the racks and top 13, to which they are attached, moved either outward, so as to expose the interior of the fireplace, orinwardly, so as to close and cover the same.
One of the parts B or B has a projecting lip or flange b at the top and the other one a flange at the bottom, so that when the two are closed together these flanges overlap and make a close joint.
In order to insure the parts remaining in position when the top has been closed, I either flatten the rollers a little at one side where theymeet the tracks when the top is closed, and this allows the top to drop down, or the track itself may be slightly cut away or depressed, as shown at (1. Either device will serve, and it allows the top to drop down and be firmly supported when it is closed, so thatthere will be no danger of its moving out of position. By these means I am enabled to move that portion of the stove-top which lies above the fireplace to one side sufliciently to allow fresh fuel to be placed in the fireplace without taking any pots or pans or other cooking utensils off the stove, they being carried by the movable portion of the top or returned with it.
A horizontal slot or draft-opening at is made just beneath the movable portion of the top, so as to admit air for draft, which, together with that passing in from the top, will prevent the escape of smoke into the room. when the top has been opened, although this will not ordinarily occur, since the fuel when run down so as to need replenishing is usually comparatively smokeless.
It will be understood that other equivalent devices may be employed for moving the sectional top without materially altering the character of the invention.
The opening a is closed, when the top is in its normal closed position, by a lip Z9 projecting down from the top, as shown.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A stove or range having a fuel-compartment, a top, one portion of which is stationary, and the other portion above the fuelcompartment is movable horizontally, guides connected with the movable portion of the top, tracks or surfaces formed beneath this top, rollers upon which said surfaces rest, rack-bars parallel with the tracks and pinions mounted upon the same shaft with the bearing-rollers, adapted to engage the racks whereby the turning of the pinions in one direction will move the top away and expose the fuel compartment, and moving it in the opposite direction will close the same.
2. In a stove or range, a top having a fixed and a movable portion, guides connected with the movable portion extending beneath the fixed portion, a track or surface beneath the movable portion of the top, smooth-faced rollers upon which said track is supported, racks parallel with the tracks and pinions fixed upon the same shaft with the rollers adapted to engage the racks and means for turning the pinion-shaft so as to move the top in one direction or the other.
3. A stove having a fixed and movable sectional top, tracks connected with the movable portion, rollers upon which said tracks rest, racks and pinions by which the movable top is moved outward to open it, or inward to close it, the tracks or rollers having the depressed or flattened portions at the point where they meet when the top is closed, whereby the top is allowed to be depressed and rest upon a fixed portion of the stove.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
