Description

J. LEE.
Cook Stove.
Patented May 16. 1846.
N. PETERS. Phohrlikbcgnphor. Washinghn. D, c
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN LEE, OF VVELLSVILLE, OHIO.
COOKING-STOVE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 4,520, dated May 16, 1846.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN LEE, of Wellsville, in the county of Columbiana and State of Ohio, have invented several new and useful Improvements in CookingStoves, and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description" of the principle or character thereof which distinguishes them from all other things before known and of the manner of making, constructing, and using the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is an isometrical view, and Fig. 2, a vertical section of the stove.
The same letters indicate like parts in all the figures.
Heretofore it has been found diflioult to equalize the heat in elevated ovens and in warm weather to prevent the excessive heat consequent on the use of cooking stoves, and a difiiculty has also arisen from their flues clogging with soot so as to prevent their baking well; and in stoves where the elevated oven is used no provision has been made independently for roasting. The improvements which I have essayed are for the purpose of remedying these various defects.
In the accompanying drawings (a) represents the fire chamber of the stove and the boiler plate at top of common construction; the flue extends under the top plate I) to the back of the stove passing in its course under the boiler holes and plate (I?) and open ing at (0) into the chimney or horizontal pipe that intervenes; in the top plate there is another opening (d) which is connected with the elevated oven by a short vertical pipe (6) a turning damper (f) which when raised covers the pipe (6) and turns the draft through (0) into the chimney when the damper is lowered flue (0) is closed and (6) opened. From the top of (e) the flue branches both'ways around the cylindrical elevated oven and a pipe (h) on the top thereof connects with the chimney; at the junction of (d) with the cylindrical flue which surrounds the oven at (6), there is a stationary plate or scraper (2') fixed, and at the top where pipe (h) joins is another scraper (73); these serve when the oven (9) is revolved to scrape off the soot. Between the cylindrical flue and the oven there is another space (Z) which serves to equalize the heat in the oven, so as to bake more evenly.
In front of the pipe (6) which forms the back thereof is an oven the top plate of the stove forming the bottom, and the con vex quarter segment of the cylindrical oven flue, the top of it, the sides and front are of sheet metal; it serves for roasting meat or other analogous purposes; to ventilate this oven holes (0) are made into the flue of the oven (9) which eflects that purpose.
Having thus fully described my improvements, what I claim thereinas new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. Surrounding the elevated oven with an air chamber between it and the flue in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
2. I also claim the scrapers (2') and (is) placed at the junctions of the flues so as not to impede the draft for the purpose of scraping the revolving oven as described.
3. I claim the combination of the oven, (m) with the elevated oven and stove, in-
the manner and for the purpose herein made
