B. R. BATHRIGK. DEVICE FOR APPLYING LIQUIDS.
No. 581,899.. Patented May 4,1897.
WI TNESSES 0 ATTORNEY,
THE umwis PEI'EFIE co momu-mu. WASHINGTON, n c
ELLSVVORTH R. BATHRIOK, OF BROOKLYN, NEIV YORK.
DEVICE FOR APPLYING LIQUIDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581,899, dated May 4, 1897.
Application filed March 2 5 l 8 9 7.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELLSWORTH R. BATH- RICK, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Devices for Applying Liquids, of which the following is a specification.
I will first describe the improvement in detail and then point out the novel features in claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same, taken through the plane of the dotted line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section of the device shown in Fig. 1, taken through the plane of the dotted line 3 3, Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows in Fig. 1; and Fig. 4. is a view of the head of the device shown in Fig. 1, looking downward.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A designates a reservoir, the two walls of which a and a have an opening a between them, which opening forms the mouth of the reservoir. This reservoir may be made of any suitable material and of any desired shape.
a designates a screw-cap which may be removed at pleasure to permit of the filling of the reservoir A.
B designates a support for a pad 0. This support B is shown as V-shaped, and that part of the support B which is directly over the opening a of the reservoir A is open, so as to permit liquid contained in the reservoir to pass through to the pad O. The support 13 is strengthened by the braces B.
The pad 0 is preferably made of felt, but any material may be employed which will hold the liquid which passes through the mouth a of the reservoir A in suspense, and discharge such liquid upon being applied to the surface to which the liquid is intended to be applied. As shown, the pad 0 extends beyond the edges of the support 15.
D designates a block placed over the pad 0, and the edges of the pad 0 are shown as extending beyond this block D.
E designates the handle of the device. This handle E fits into a tube F, forming part of or Serial No. 629,176. (No model.)
affixed to the reservoir A. I may use a brace F, intended to impart additional strength to the device at the point where the greatest strain occurs in use.
G designates a rod fastened to or made integral with the handle E. At the end of the rod G, which terminates in the handle E, are
washers e'c. I prefer to make the washer e of felt and the washer e of metal.
The rod G passes through a circular opening in the bottom of the reservoir A and through a tube a in the mouth a of the reservoir directly in line with the circular opening in the bottom of the reservoir. The rod G also passes through openings cut to receive it in the pad 0 and block D. The upper end of the rod G is screw-threaded and a nut g is placed on this screw-threaded part of the rod G. This nut g may fit in a portion of the block D countersunk to receive it, and it will be readily understood that by merely turning the handle E the pressure of the block D on the pad 0 can be regulated, and as the pad 0 fits into the mouth a the operator can by this simple turning of the handle E regulate the supply of liquid to the pad O, and thereby the amount of saturation of the pad C will be controlled.
The various parts of the device can be made of any desired materials.
What'I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A device for applying liquids consisting of a reservoir having an opening therein to form a mouth, a pad covering said opening, a support for said pad, and means operated by the handle of said device forpressin g said pad more or less firmly to the mouth of said reservoir, substantially as specified.
2. A device for applying liquids consisting of a reservoir having an opening therein to form a mouth, a pad covering said opening, a block partiallycovering said pad, a rod affixed to, or made integral with the handle of said device, said rod extending through said reservoir, pad and block, and a nut engaging with said rod to hold said pad more or Less closely to the mouth of said reservoir, substantially as specified.
3. A device for applying liquids consisting of a reservoir having an opening therein to I hold said pad more orless closely to the'mouth form a mouth, a pad covering said opening, a of said reservoir, substantially as specified. support for said pad, a block partially e0ver- 1 ,T n A r 7 ing said pad, a rod affixed to, or made inte- BLLS 0R HI BA FIIRICK' 5 gral with, the handle of said device, said 1 0d lVitnesses:
