Description

UNTTED STATES PATE T OFFICE.
CLARENCE IRVING WARD AND CHARLES PEALE DIDIER, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNORS, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, OF ONE-THIRD TO JAMES S. REESE, OF SAME PLACE. I
TRANSFORMATION-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 581,379, dated April 27, 1897'. Application filed November 9, 1896. Serial No. 611,489. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CLARENCE IRVING WARD and CHARLES PEALE DIDIER, citizens of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Transformation-Boxes, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to transformationboxes; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is adapted for use as a'trade-box for small merchandise and for other and similar purposes.
The invention consists of two separate parts, one of which consists of an outer casing and the other a slide or movable part which is mounted within said casing, said parts being of the construction hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which similar numerals of reference 'designate the same parts wherever found throughout the several views, and in 'which Figure 1 is a front view of our improved transformation-box; Fig. 2, a similar view with the slide partly withdrawn; Fig. 3, a centrallongitudinal section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a plan view of a blank from which the slide is formed, and Fig. 5 a similar view of a blank from which the casing is formed.
In the practice of our invention we provide a transformation-box for the purpose herein specified, which consists of a casing 6, in which is mounted a slide 7, and the casing 6 is open at both ends. The casing 6 is formed from the blank 9, (shown in Fig. 5,) whichis cut from a suitable sheet of paper or similar material, and which, for purposes of illustration and description, is provided with transverse dotted lines 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15, and in forming the casing the end 16 of the blank 9 is folded back on the dotted line 10 to form one side of the casing. The said blank is then folded on the dotted line 11 to form the opposite side 17, and on the dotted line 12 to form the back 18, and then on the dotted lines 13, 14, and 15, and in folding the blank 9 in this manner the part between the lines 13 and 14 will overlap the side 16, and the part 20 will overlap the part 19', and the part 21 the side 17, and the part 19 will constitute a false top for. the casing, and the part 20 the true top, and formed in the lower half of the part 20 is an opening 21, adjacent to which and preferably at the opposite sides thereof are formed parts of a picture, as shown at 22, the main part of which is shown at 23 on the false top 19, and when the casing is thus formed the main part of the picture 23 will show through the opening 21 and the picture will be complete, as shown in Fig, 2, and the upper half of the false top 19 is also provided with an opening 24, which extends nearly to the middle thereof.
The slide 7 is composed of the blank shown in Fig. 4, which is also cut from asuitable sheet of paper or similar material, and which consists of a body portion 24,which is adapted to form the back of the slide and which is provided with side flaps 25, which are adapted to be folded on the dotted lines 26 to form the sides of the slide. The back 24 of the slide is provided at one end with an extension 27, which is adapted to form one end of the slide and on which is formed the top 28 of the slide, which is only about half as long as the back 24, and in forming the said end 27 and the top 28 the blank is folded on the dotted lines 29, and the said top 28 is provided with side flaps 30, which are adapted to be folded on the dotted lines 31 over the sides 25 of the back 24, and formed on the end 28 of the top is a tongue 32, the outer end of which is wider than the inner end at the point 33, where it connects with the top 28, and formed on said tongue or printed, painted, or stamped thereon is a part of a picture 34, which is also designed to complete that portion of the picture 22 which is formed on the top. of the casing, and the end of the back 24% of the slide opposite the dotted lines 29 is provided with an extension 35, which is divided transversely by the dotted line 36, and the main part 35 is adapted to form one end of the slide, and the outer part 37 to be folded forwardly over the slide in the ordinary manner, so as to close the end thereof, and the tongue 32, on which the picture 3% is formed, is designed to be,
folded backwardly, as shown in Fig. 3, and when thus folded the narrow portion 33 of said tongue is adapted to slide in the opening 24 of the false top of the casing and to pass over the lower half of said false top and to conceal the picture 23, formed thereon.
hen the slide is within the casing,as shown in Fig. l, the picture'on the box will be composed of the part 3% on the tongue 32 and the parts 22 on the top of the casing, and when the slide is withdrawn, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the tongue 32 will also be withdrawn and the picture will be composed of the part 23 on the false top of the casing and the parts 22 on the top thereof, as shown in said Fig. 2.
Cur invention is not limited to the material of which the box or the separate parts thereof is composed, nor is it limited to the style of the picture or the separate parts thereof, and it is apparent that many changes in and modifications of these features of the construction may be made without departing from the spirit of our invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The herein described. transformationboX, which consists of a casing which is open at both ends, and provided with a false top, the true top being provided with an opening adjacent to which is formed a part of a picture, and the false top being provided back of said opening with the remainder of said picture, said casing being also provided with a slide, the top of which is provided with a tongue, which is folded backwardly and adapted to move in an opening formed in the false top of the casing, and to cover the part of the picture formed thereon, said tongue being also provided with a part of a picture which is adapted to correspond with that formed on the top of the casing and to eomplete the same, substantially as shown and described.
2. The herein-described transformationbox, which consists of a casing which is open at both ends, and provided with a false top, the true top being provided with an opening adjacent to which is formed a part of a picture and the false top being provided back of said opening with the remainder of said picture, said casing being also provided with a slide, the top of which is provided with a tongue, which is folded backwardly and adapted to move in an opening formed in the false top of the casing, and to cover the part of the picture formed thereon, said tongue being also provided with a part of a picture which is adapted to correspond with that formed on the top of the casing and to complete the same, said slide being also provided with a foldingend piece and flap, substantially as shown and described.
3. A transformation-bo;\i, composed of a casing, and a slide, said casing being composed of a blanlr constructed as described, and being provided with a false top, and with an opening in the true top, and the false top being also provided with a slot in one end thereof, and the slide being composed of a blank folded as described, and the top thereof, being provided with a tongue which is adapted to move in said slot, and to overlap the falsetop of the casing and the slide being also provided at one end with a folding end and flap, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our invention we have signed our names, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 2d day of November, 1806.
