UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES S. ROSE, OF BROOKHAVEN, NE? YORK.
PAN-LIFTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 580,900, dated April 20, 1897.
Application filed May 16, 1896.
T0 aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES S. ROSE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brookhaven, in the county of Suffolk and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pan-Lifters and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in' panlifters; and it has for its object, among others, to provide a simple and cheap device so constructed as to lift pans, pots, and kettles and the like, and which, after the same has been engaged thereby, may be moved so that the same cannot be accidentally disengaged therefrom, but will be securely held thereby. It is provided with means for receiving a wire-edge or a thick edge, and also with provision for preventing the pan or other article from going up beyond the slot.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claims.
The invention in this instance residesin the peculiarities of construction and the novel combinations, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the drawings, and then particularly pointed out in the claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is an elevation of the improved device. Fig. 2 is a View showing its application to a pan. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the same.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring now to the details of the draw- Serial No. 591,838. (No model.)
imity to its pivot upon the under side it is formed with the notch E, adapted to receive a projection on the shank of the jaw F, as shown. To the other end of this arm or plate D are secured the parallel arms G, between which is pivoted, as at h, the arm or plate H, which has at its free end the roughened or serrated portion or jaw or clamp I, adjacent to which is the shoulder or sharp edge J to hold onto a wire-edge of a kettle with a very small projection.
K is a narrow inclined slot formed of greater depth to receive a thick or wide projecting edge.
L is a projection or log to prevent pans from getting or going up beyond the slot, and this projection or lug is received in the notchE when the jaws are in their closed position.
The jaw or clamp I is provided with the depending rounded portion or edge M, which is adapted to form a fulcrum 011 which the same is designed to turn when pressed down by the handle, thus making a perfect lock that nothing can be wrenched from the grasp of nor accidentally displaced from.
Modifications in detail may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
What is claimed as new is 1. The combination with the handle and the arms, of the arm pivoted thereon and having a notch and a jaw, and the jaw pivotally supported therefrom and having a slot and aprojection fitted to said notch, substantially as specified.
2. The device described, consisting of the handle, the arms extending therefrom, the arm pivotally mounted between the arms and having a jaw and a notch,-and a second arm pivotally supported from the last-mentioned arm and having a rounded depending face and a slot with a deeper slot extending therefrom and an upwardly-extending projection,
ings by letter, A designates the handle portion, which may be of any suitable material and length. 13 are parallel arms secured thereto near one end in any suitable manner, although they may in some instances be integral therewith. Pivotally mounted between the outer ends of these arms, as at O, is the arm or plate D, which has a portion d roughened or serrated, as shown, and in proxsu lostantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed this.
