Description
No. 867,070. PATENTED SEPT. 24, 1907.
W. R. OGDEN.
PAN LIFTER. APPLICATION rILn'n 00119. 1906. 7
aktouwgr WALTER R. OGDEN; OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
PAN-LIFTER Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 24, 1907.
Application filed October 19, 1906. Serial No. 339,680.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER R. OGDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pan-Lifters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in domestic utensils and it particularly pertains to a novel embodiment of dish or pan lifter.
The invention aims primarily to provide a dish lifter in which the weight of the dish serves to increase the grip of the lifting tool, whereby accidental displacement of the dish is prevented.
The invention aims as a further object to provide a device of the above type which shall be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and practical and eificient in use.
The detailed construction will appear in the course of the following description in which reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, ,like numerals designating like parts throughout the several views wherein:
Figure 1, is a side elevation of a device constructed in accordance with my invention and in operative engagement with a pan or other domestic utensil. Fig. 2, is a similar view, of the invention in its initially engaged position and showing the device partly in section to illustrate in detail elements to be hereinafter specifically'referred to.
Referring specifically to the accompanying drawingsfthe letter A designates a culinary or domestic vessel, which as shown, though not necessarily, is provided upon its upper edge with a horizontal flange a. The. lifting device embodied in my invention comprises an elongated handle 1 provided at its end with a substantially right angular leg 2 terminating in an enlarged knob 3. A straight clamping jaw 4, is pivoted as at 5 at the junction of said handle and leg. The jaw provided with depending ears 10, which straddle the jaw 4. A pivot pin 11 passes through the ears 10 and sel and its plane surface 9 engages the flange a if the vessel is provided with such a flange The handle 1 is then grasped and moved downwardly said handle and the jaw 4 swinging upon the stationary pivot 11.
It is to be noted that the leg 2, owing to its engagement with the jaw 6 in the manner described, causes both jaws to bind more closely to the sides of the vessel. It is to be further noted that the jaw 6 in its gripping position extends at a substantial right angle to the side of the vessel as that the line of force is a direct one. In this manner all liability of the vessel slipping from the lifting tool is avoided. The ends of the recess 12 serve to limit the movement of the handle 1 in either direction as will be readily apparent. By'raising the handle 1, the jaws release their grip on the vessel.
Having described my invention I claim:
A pan lifter comprising a handle having a leg disposed at a substantial right angle thereto and terminating in an enlarged rounded engaging head, a gripping jaw pivoted to said handle at the point otjuncture of said angular leg and terminating in a squared head, a second gripping jaw terminating in a depending angular extension overlying said squared head, and provided with a pair of spaced parallel ears embracing said first named jaw and pivotally connected thereto adjacent the juncture of said jaw and said handle, said second named jaw being also provided with a rearwardly extending portion overlying said angular leg, and having a concavely curved segment formed on its under face between said ears to permit of the working engagement therein of the enlarged head of said angular leg.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
WALTER R. OGDEN.

n action serves to raise the jaw 4 until the end thereof ongages the outer surface of the vessel A.
