Description

F. T. CONLEY.
HOT PAN'LIFTER. APPLICATION HLED MAY I8. 19!].
1,320,318. Patented Oct. 28,1919.
INVENTOR ATTORN EY FREDERICK 1*. container zeosro v, MASSACHUSETTS.
HOT-PAN LIFTER.
To all whom it may come? 1 1 Be it known that I, FREDERICK T. CONLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hot-Pan Lifters, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has for its object to provide a simple, durable and practical device for lifting and removing culinary vessels, such as pie plates, pans and other dishes, used for cooking purposes, and the said invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arran ement of parts set forth in the following description and falling within the scope of the appended claim. I
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the lifting device in pan clamping engagement, the pan being shown in dotted lines; and
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section taken through one of the clamping jaws showing the manner of connecting the adjustable head with said jaws.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing, in which like characters of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several views, 5 denotes the device generally adapted for lifting and removing culinary vessels of various sizes from stoves, tables and the like. The lifting device embodies a pair of crossed tongs 6 and 7, each provided with a handle 8, a jaw and a shank, connecting the jaw with said handle. The jaw 9 is provided in the active gripping face thereof with a transverse semi-cylindrical groove 11 and the outer wall of said groove being extended below the terminal of the opposite wall of the groove, to provide the jaw with a transverse depending lip 12, and I desire for the sake of clearness to hereafter refer to the jaw 9 as the upper jaw. The active face of the lower jaw 10' is provided with a transverse rectangular slot'13 for slidably associating with the jaw 10 a T-shaped gripping member 14, the purpose of such gripping member being to adaptthe lifting device for culinary vessels of various depths. A facing plate 15 is secured to the jaw 10 and over the rectangular slot 13 thereof, and this plate to an extent serves as the rigid gripping face of the jaw 10. In other words, upon theuse of the lifting device, the depending lip 12 being flared in an outward and downward direction, will adapt Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented cat. as. 1919.
Application filed. May 18, 1917. Serial No. 169,545.
the same to engage with the inner circum ference of the vesseland the faclng plate 15. w ll contact with the outer facing or circumference of such vessel.
may be forced in an outward direction and prevent any liabilty of the culinary vessel dropping from between the jaws of the tongs. Upon the disengagement of the lifting device from the rim of the culinary vessel, the aws will be automatically forced open through the influence of the spring 20 coiled about the pivot 21 of the tongs.
It will be noted upon reference to Fig. 2 that the upper edgeof the lower member 7 is concave or transversely grooved at its extremity to cooperate with the groove 11 in the lower edge of the upper member in fitting around the bead at the upper edge of a pan. The upper edge of the facing plate or the lower jaw is thus brought against the outer surface of the rim of the pan in direct opposition to the overhanging lip 12 bearing against the inner surface of said rim so that a strong grip is obtained on the pan without buckling the rim.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of construction and the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates, and while I have described the principles of operation of the invention together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed as new is As a new article of manufacture, a lifting device for pans, dishes and the like, em-
bodying'a pair of pivotally connected cross tongs each comprising a handle, an upper jaw formed on the end of one of said handles, a lower jaw of rectangular formation provided on the end of the other of said handles and having a rectangular slot, a serrated facing plate ecured to and in sp d relation with the active face of the last mentioned aw and covering the said slot, and a T-shaped member mounted in the slot of the lower jaw, the shank of the Tshaped member being provided with an elongated slot and being in length approximately the width of the facing plate, and a pin protruding through said facing plate and thence through the slot of the T-shaped 10 gripping member to prevent any accidental displacement of the latter from its jaw and further serving to limit the outward movement thereof, the said plate forming a continuation of the head of the gripping member upon the adjustment of the same in a direction toward and in abutting relation with the gripping member.
Intestimony whereof I aflix my signature.
FREDERICK T. CONLEY.
