Description

(No Model.) J. S. CARTER.
' PORTABLE GLUE APPLYING DEVICE. No. 580.769. Patented Apr. 13, 1897.
Z I III 0 Z mu u I .EES. a JQ/ZWMI 28. W 2% r? cg UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN S. CARTER, OF BUFFALO, NEIV YORK.
PORTABLE GLUE-APPLYING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 580,769, dated April 13, 1897. Application filed October 22, 1896. Serial No. 609,672. (No model.)
To CLZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN S. CARTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Glue-Applying Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is an improvement in portable glue-applying devices; and it consists in the novel features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate one form in which I have contemplated embodying my invention, and said invention is fully disclosed in the following description and claim.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 rep resents a top plan view of the device. Fig. 2 represents a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the discharge-nozzle.
In the drawings, A represents the glue receptacle or reservoir, which is shown as being cone-shaped with its sides converging toward the bottom, but this is not essential. The reservoir A is provided with a water-jacket B surrounding the same to contain hot water, which is introduced through a suitable aperture Z) in the top, closed by a screw-cap b or other suitable closure. At its lower end the reservoir A is provided with a delivery-tube C, which has its lower end cut away on opposite sides at c 0, so that only two opposite sharp edges 0 c of thetube engage the article to which the glue is to be applied, thus enabling the glue to be flowed on very evenly without smearing and leaving sharply-defined edges. The tube 0 is also provided with a valve D, which controls the flow of glue through said tube, and said valve is provided with a hand-wheel or cross-bar at outside of the device, by which it can be set at the desired point.
The upper part of the reservoir A is provided with an enlarged opening a for the admission of. the glue, and this opening is preferably surrounded by a vertical flange or collar a.
E represents a cover which is hinged to the top of the reservoir and fits snugly around the flange a when closed. 7
F represents a long handle or arm extending from the upper part of the reservoir laterally, by means of which it is operated.
In operation the Waterjacket B is filled with boiling water, and the reservoir A is filled with glue. When it is desired to apply glue to a surface, the operatorsets the valve at such a position that the glue will feed slowly through the delivery-tube,and, placing the nozzle upon the article to be coated, moves the device along by means of the handle, thus applying the glue. It is found best, ordinarily, to have the cut-away portions 0 c of the nozzle at right angles to the handle, as shown in Fig. 2, so that the device is movedsidewise in applying the glue. By means of the long handle very large articles can be coated with glue very expeditiously, the glue being maintained in molten condition by the hot water in the water-jacket B.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a portable glue-applying device the combination with the reservoir, of a water-jacket surrounding the same,a handle secured to and extending laterally from the reservoir, a delivery-tube connected with the reservoir provided with cut-away portions adjacent to its lower end forming two opposite narrow portions for engaging the surface to be coated and a regulating-valve in said tube, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN S. CARTER.
