Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY Dnrrz, a citizen oi' the United States, residing at the city and county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closures; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact dcscription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of relerence marked thereon, which `form a part of this specilication.
My invention relates to improvements in closures for cans or other vessels or receptacles which are usually kept closed except when pouring liquid therefrom.
My improved closure includes a vent which is opened when the closure is adjusted to pour liquid from the can. This closure is ot' the class which is permitted a partial rotation. Vhen turned in one direction, both the vent opening as well as the opening for the discharge of liquid is closed While when the device is turned in the other direction both of these orifices are open. For convenience of adjustment the stationary part of the closure is provided with two stops adapted to limit the travel of the movable member in both directions. `When the travel of the movable part is stopped in one direction, the closure is open for liquidpouring purposes, while when it reaches its limit ot travel in the other direction the device is closed. Between the movable part of the closure and the top ot the -an, is interposed a quantity ot' packing material which is held in place by a collar whose upper and lower edges are respectively provided with interiorly and exteriorly projecting flanges, the upper flange serving to maintain the movable part of the closure in place, the latter having an exteriorly projecting flange located beneath the interiorly projecting flange of the collar.
I-Iaving briefly outlined my improved construction, I will proceed to describe the same in detail reference being made to the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.
In this drawing, Figure l is a section taken through my improved closure also cutting the top ot' the can or receptacle to which it is applied, the latter being partly broken away. Fig. 2 is a top plan view ot' the construction. Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3-3 Fig. l looking downwardly or in the direction oit' the arrow. Fig. 4 is a View similar to Fig. l, a funnel, however, being inserted for purposes of lilling.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the views.
Let the numeral 5 designate a can or other vessel with which my improved device may be used. As shown in the drawing the top of the can is cut away as shown at (3 and to the top surrounding this opening is applied a collar 7 having an cxteriorly projecting flange 8 and an interiorly projecting similar flange 9. B `azed to the collar is a plate 10 which occupies a position in the plane of the flange 8, the plate being applied interiorly and arranged to close the opening t3 except that an orifice l2 is left for inlet and discharge purposes. The plate l() is provided with a short upwardly turned flange 1,3 surrounding the orifice l2. Intel-posed between the plate l0 and the movable part la of the closure, is a quantity of packing material 15. The movable part ll ol the closure consists oi a casing 1G comprising a horizontal top portion, a depending vertical portion 't7 and an outwardly turned flange 18 which occupies a position beneath the inwardly turned flange t) of the collar and is free to rotate between the packing material and the flange 9. This movable closure part is further provided with a bottom plate 18 which is in direct engagement with the packing material and is provided with a discharge opening 19 and a vent orifice 20. The discharge opening 15) registers with au opening 2l formed in the packing material and also with the opening Directly above the opening 1S), is an opening Q2 'formeel in the top of the casing which is normally closed by a cover "hthe latter being readily removable for filling purposes. The easing 1G forms an air chamber 2l which is in communication with ay spout Q5 by an opening QG. This spoilt projects laterally from the casing and is used as a handle for turning the casing. The casing 'lti is :further provided with a laterally project-4 ing vent tube 27, the same being open at both ends and in communication with the chamber Q-t. The stationary part'. ot' the closure is provided with an open-ended tube l Q8 which passes through the plate l0 as well as the packing material, and registers with the vent opening 20. This tube also projects a short distance into the can.
Then the movable part of the closure is in the position shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4 it is in position for purposes of discharge, the openings 12, 21 and 19 being in the registering position whereby the liquid is adapted to How from the can into the chamber 24; and thence through the discharge spout 25. Then in this 'position the vent tube 1() registers with the vent orifice 20, whereby air is allowed to flow freely through the tube 27 into the chamber 24 and thence through the vent orice and the vent tube 28 into the can, to take the place of the removed liquid.
Then it is desired to ll the can, the cap 23 is removed, and the spout of a funnel inserted in the registering openings 22, 19, 21 and 12. During the filling operation the air escapes from the can through the vent openings which are in position for the purpose. After the can is filled, the casing should be turned to the closed position or that indicated in Fig. 8 in which the opening 19 is closed by the packing material l5. 1n this event the position of the discharge opening 21 is indicated by the dotted circle. rlhe flange 8 of the collar T is provided with two upwardly projecting pins 30 and 31 which are arranged to limit the travel of the casing in both directions, by coming in contact with the spout Then the casing is moved to the closed position, the spout engages the stop 30 while when it is moved to the open position, it engages the stop 31.
The venttube 28 not only serves as a vent passage through the packing disk but also serves to maintain the said disk in a uniform position since the tube passes through the bottom plate 10 of the device which is relatively stationary, being brazed to the collar 7 as heretofore described. it will be understood that it is exceedingly important that the packing disk should maintain a uniform position, in order that the openings therein may register with the vent opening 20 and the discharge opening 19 in the bottoni plate 8 of the casing when the latter is adjusted for discharge or filling purposes.
Attention is called to the fact that the plate 10 below the casing which is brazed to the collar 7 on the inside, makes the closure complete independently of the can or vessel Ato which it is attached. Hence in order to apply it to any vessel or receptacle it is only necessary to cut out an opening of the size of the plate 10 and then apply the collar and its attachments thereto by soldering or otherwise securing the fiange 8 to the top of the receptacle. Another novel feature of the device consists in forming an opening 22 in the top of the casing having it so arranged that it shall register with the discharge openings 19, 21 and 12, when the casing is properly adjusted thus permitting the insertion of a funnel for filling purposes as shown in Fig. 4 and heretofore explained.
Having thus described my inventiomwhat I claim is: K
1. The combination with a can or other receptacle, of a packing disk applied to the top of the can and provided with distinct discharge and vent openings, a collar surrounding said disk and having an interiorly projecting flange, a casing having an air chamber mounted on the disk and an exteriorly projecting flange located beneath the interior flange of the collar, the said casing being provided with an opening in its top in alinement with the discharge opening of the packing disk for the purpose of filling the can, a discharge spout in cominunication with the casing chamber and adapted to be turned for purposes of discharge, the collar being provided with stops adapted to engage the spout for limiting` the travel of the casing in both directions, the said casing being in communication with the discharge and vent openings of the packing disk substantially as described.
2. A closure for cans or other receptacles comprising a packing disk, a collar inclosing said disk, a casing rotatably connected with the collar and engaging the top of the disk, the casing having an air chamber, the bottom of the casing and the disk being provided with discharge and vent openings adapted to register wlienthe casing is prop-- erly adjusted, the said openings communieating with the air chamber, the casing having an opening in its top in alinementl with the discharge opening in the disk and bottom of the casing, the collar being provided with a bottom plate which the packing` plate engages and which is provided with dis charge and vent openings registering with those of the disk and the casing when the latter is properly adjusted, and a vent tube inserted in the vent openings of the plate and packing disk whereby the disk is held against movement, substantially as described. l
